SIMPLE VERBS am are is was were do did have has had will be being been to You may have heard them called LINKING OR HELPING verbs.

Because we have two types of verbs, we have two types of sentences.

Two Types of Sentences: Description Sentences use Simple Verbs. Action Sentences use Action Verbs.

You jump. The monkey climbs. We own it. Who wins? I think about it very hard. We read our book. Sam watched the play. Sally offered us some candy. We depend on the ferry. Are these Action Verbs? These are all action sentences. Remember - if you can do it, it’s an action verb.

Description sentences use simple verbs. The car is blue. The boy was tall. The boats were old. We will be there. This is really easy. The oaks grew tall. I am a man. You are Sally. Sally is your name.

Two Types of Sentences: Description Sentences use Simple Verbs. Action Sentences use Action Verbs. But action sentences can also use Simple Verbs. How?

In Action Sentences, Simple Verbs help show the TENSE. I had been watching. I have watched. I have been watching. I watch. I am watching. I will be watching. I will have been watching. I watched. I had watched. I was watching. I will watch.
