Healthy People ■ Healthy People  Health goals for our nation since 1980  A comprehensive set of 10-year health promotion and disease prevention objectives aimed at improving health.  Grounded in the notion that establishing objectives and providing benchmarks to track progress over time can motivate, guide and focus attention.

National Prevention Strategy On June 10, 2010 President Obama established the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council, known as the National Prevention Council. Chaired by U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, the National Prevention Council is comprised of 17 Federal department and agency heads responsible for coordinating and leading prevention, wellness, and health promotion efforts across the Federal government and the Nation.

National Prevention Strategy ■ An initiative of the Affordable Care Act that identifies goals, priorities, recommendations, and measures for improving health through prevention ■ Grounds recommendations in evidence-based practice ■ Aligns and focuses federal prevention and health promotion efforts. ■ Aligns with existing national efforts, such as: –Healthy People 2020 –National Quality Strategy –First Lady’s “Let’s Move!” campaign –America’s Great Outdoor Initiative

Empowered People ■ Provide people with tools and information to make healthy choices. ■ Promote positive social interactions and support healthy decision making. ■ Engage and empower people and communities to plan and implement prevention policies and programs. ■ Improve education and employment opportunities.

Active Living -- Recommendations ■ Encourage community design and development that supports physical activity. ■ Promote and strengthen school and early learning policies and programs that increase physical activity. ■ Facilitate access to safe, accessible, and affordable places for physical activity. ■ Support workplace policies and programs that increase physical activity. ■ Assess physical activity levels and provide education, counseling, and referrals.

Example of Actions: Active Living Promote the development of transportation options and systems that encourage active transportation and accommodate diverse needs. Support adoption of active living principles in community design, such as mixed land use, compact design, and inclusion of safe and accessible parks and green space. Support coordinated, comprehensive, and multi-component programs and policies to encourage physical activity and physical education, especially in schools and early learning centers. Partners Can …. Support schools and early learning centers in meeting physical activity guidelines. States, Tribal, local, Territorial governments Conduct physical activity assessments, provide counseling, and refer patients to allied health care or health and fitness professionals. Health Care Systems, Insurers, and Clinicians Adopt policies and programs that promote walking, bicycling, and use of public transportation. Businesses and Employers Engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate- intensity activity each week (adults) or at least one hour of activity each day (children). Individuals and Families
