8 About Healthy People Provides science-based, 10 year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans Serves as the foundation for prevention efforts across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Supports HHS efforts to create a healthier Nation

9 Mission of Healthy People 2020
Identify nationwide health improvement priorities. Increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health, disease, and disability. Provide measurable objectives and goals that are applicable at the national, State, and local levels. Engage multiple sectors to take actions to strengthen policies and improve practices. Identify critical research, evaluation, and data collection needs.

10 Healthy People 2020 Contains 42 topic areas
600 objectives which encompass 1,200 measures A smaller set of Healthy People objectives, called Leading Health Indicators, has been selected to communicate high- priority health issues The process of selecting the Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) was completed by approximately 50 members across the HHS and other Federal departments

13 Health Disparities Health disparities refer to differences between groups of people. These differences can affect how frequently a disease affects a group, how many people get sick, or how often the disease causes death. Many different populations are affected by disparities. These include: Racial and ethnic minorities Residents of rural areas Women, children, the elderly Persons with disabilities

14 HP 2020 Project Secretary Burwell has hired you to help promote HP2020. You are now a public health educator: Choose one of the 42 topic areas (see handout) Decide why this topic is a serious public health issue to you and our nation Choose one of the specific objectives under the topic to focus on Choose your target audience Establish a campaign (PSA) around this objective that can hopefully change the US life expectancy number in 2020

16 HP 2020 PSA You will have two health classes in the IMC to work on your project Projects may be completed in small groups (2 or 3 students) If your partner is absent BOTH days in the IMC – the partner will now work by themselves… You do not have to be artistic – just CREATIVE! You do NOT have to present the completed project in front of the class; but your project will be on display in room J006
