Delivering the Grave Prognosis Recall from your experience a donation case where you had to deliver the grave prognosis to a family…

Delivering the Grave Prognosis What key elements of the conversation are critical to ensure a family really understands the futility/finality for their loved ones?

Delivering the Grave Prognosis Considering a Donor patient: –Do you talk to the patient if they have been declared Brain dead? –Do you speak of the patient in present or past tense to family members?

Delivering the Grave Prognosis When there is potential for organ donation, how is delivering bad news different (or is there a difference) from when there is not organ donation potential?

Delivering the Grave Prognosis When a colleague/consulting service has painted a different picture of the prognosis to the family (perhaps more hopeful than you think is warranted) what do you do to remedy this?

Delivering the Grave Prognosis RN’s, Social Workers, and Chaplains are sometimes caught in the middle when these “mixed messages” from providers occur. What advice would you offer to help them when these situations arise?

Delivering the Grave Prognosis Question to Audience: –Does anyone have a success story of helping a family deal with conflicting messages from different providers? – How did you help the family get the right message?

Delivering the Grave Prognosis How does the delivery of the message of grave prognosis change for a pediatric patient?

Delivering the Grave Prognosis If attending Thursday only; Please return completed evaluation forms to registration table to collect certificate for contact hours. Dinner at 6:30 in conference center –Bring your meal ticket located inside your name badge Dance at 8:00 Grand Ballroom –Cash bar Continental Breakfast to be served Friday morning inside your chosen track session from 07:30-8:30

Delivering the Grave Prognosis Does anyone in the audience have a question for our panelists? –Trauma Surgeon Intensivist? –Pediatric Intensivist? –Neuro-Surgery PA?
