RDA Special Topics: Compilations & Collaborations—Pt. 2 Ana Lupe Cristán Policy and Standards Division Revised July 2012 Adapted for UC San Diego Catalogers Presented July 25, 2013 by Shi Deng and Marilú Vallejo

Constructing AAP for Compilations in four parts Pt. 1. Compilations vs. Collaboration  Collaboration vs. Compilation  Constructing an AAP Representing a Work RDA One Work by More than One Creator (Collaborative Works) RDA Compilation of works by more than one creator (Compilations of Works by different Persons, Families, or Corporate Bodies)  Whole-Part Relationships (505 Contents) RDA Rule 25.1 & 26.1 Authorized Access points for Analytics Pt. 2. Compilations of works by one creator Pt. 3. Compilations of translations (Language editions) Pt. 4. Commentary, annotations, illustrative content, etc., added to a previously existing work

Agenda What are we covering today in pt. 2: How to construct AAP for compilations of works by one creator -RDA Works Created by One Creator -RDA Preferred Title for a Compilation of Works of One Creator -UCSD Local Practice What will NOT be covered today: Compilations of translations (Language editions) Commentary, annotations, illustrative content, etc., added to a previously existing work Musical works, legal works, religious works, and official communications

Identifying Compilations of Works by One Creator Two clues: It’s a Compilation: a resource contains more than one work It’s by a Single Creator a resource contains more than one work by the same single creator

RDA Constructing AAP for Works Created by One Creator

RDA Work Created by One Creator Works Created by One Person, Family, or Corporate Body If: one person, family, or corporate body is responsible for creating the work (see ), Then: Construct the authorized access point representing the work by combining (in this order) a)the authorized access point representing that person (see ), family (see ), or corporate body (see ), as applicable b)the preferred title for the work (see 6.2.2)6.2.2

What about Compilations of Works by One Creator? You will apply the same instruction: RDA Construct the authorized access point representing the work by combining (in this order): a)the authorized access point representing that person (see ), family (see ), or corporate body (see ), as applicable b)the preferred title for the work (see 6.2.2)6.2.2 Specifically: See RDA for Preferred Title for the compilations of works by one creator

What about Compilations of Works by One Creator?

RDA Recording the Preferred Title for a Compilation of Works of One Creator RDA Recording the Preferred Title for a Compilation of Works of One Person, Family, or Corporate Body If a compilation of works is known by a title that is used in resources embodying that compilation or in reference sources, apply the instructions at – For other compilations, apply the instructions at – , as applicable

RDA When to apply? Is the compilation known by a title? YES – Apply RDA for works created after 1500: choose as the preferred title the title in the original language by which the work has become known either through use in resources embodying the work or in reference sources – Apply for works created before NO, use a conventional collective title (CCT) – Complete works (RDA ): Works – Complete works in a single form (RDA ): Poems, etc – Other compilations of two or more works (RDA ): Works. Selections. Poems (etc.). Selections.

RDA When to apply—LC Interpretation Moved away from LCRI 25.10, no longer ask if it is a distinctive title Accordingly, LC also modified LC Classification and Shelflising Manual 633 Literary Authors Subarrangement of Works, 1b. Under AACR2: Separate works. Use for individual works, as well as for collections consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that are being published for the first time while the author is still living (disregarding previous publication in journals or periodicals). Under RDA: Separate works. Use for individual works, as well as for collections that have not been assigned an RDA conventional title because the collection has become known by its title. Note: Until 2013, collections consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that were published for the first time while the author was still living (disregarding previous publication in journals or periodicals) were classed as Separate works. That distinction no longer applies.

RDA : How to Determine “known by a title” So, how do you determine it is known by a title LC Interpretation (based on its training materials) – Commonly known: Preferred title is already established under its original title – If “this is the first publication of that compilation, do not consider the question of ‘commonly known’ and add a 240 with a conventional collective title.” UCSD alternative – A compilation consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that is being published for the first time, and – Title is known by its author, publishers, readers, on the web, in a bookstore, etc.

RDA : how to determine “known by a title” Example 1. Preferred title is established under its original title Authority record: 1001 Whitman, Walt, ǂd ǂt Leaves of grass Yes, it is known by a title, apply or Bibliographic record: 1001Whitman, Walt, ǂd Leaves of Grass / ǂc Walt Whitman. NO CCT required

RDA : how to determine “known by a title” Example 2. Published for the first time, preferred title hasn’t established yet LC Interpretation: No: Do not consider it is known by a title, create CCT per RDA Alternative Alternative Bibliographic record: 1001 Erdrich, Loren Poems. ǂk Selections I take back the sponge cake : ǂb a lyrical choose-your- own-adventure / ǂc Loren Erdrich and Sierra Nelson Authority record: 1001 Erdrich, Loren. ǂt Poems. ǂk Selections 4001 Erdrich, Loren. ǂt I take back the sponge cake

RDA : how to determine “known by a title” Example 2. Published for the first time, preferred title hasn’t established yet UCSD Interpretation and Practice: Yes: Consider it is known by a title. Apply RDA Bibliographic record: NO 240 CCT required 1001 Erdrich, Loren I take back the sponge cake : ǂb a lyrical choose-your- own-adventure / ǂc Loren Erdrich and Sierra Nelson Authority record: Do not create Classification: Class by separate work, i.e. P-PZ 40 : P-PZ40.xA61-.xZ458 Separate works. By title *Copy cataloging: Accept the CCT on the record

RDA : how to determine “known by a title” Example 2. Published for the first time, preferred title hasn’t established yet UCSD Interpretation and Practice: Questions and Discussion

Applying RDA & RDA Complete Works = use “Works” (Same as AACR2) The writings of Mark Twain. New York : ǂb Gabriel Wells, ǂc ; 37 vols. AAP: Twain, Mark, ǂd Works. ǂf 1922 RDA Complete Works in a single form = use a term for conventional collective title: Correspondence, Essays, Librettos, Lyrics, Novels, Plays, Poems, Prose works, Short stories, Speeches (Same as AACR2) Complete poems / ǂc Ernest Hemingway ; edited, with an introduction and notes by Nicholas Gerogiannis. AAP: 1001 Hemingway, Ernest, ǂd Poems

Applying RDA RDA Other Compilations of Two or More Works (Apply PS Alternative) = ADD “Selections” to the appropriate Conventional Collective Title (No longer use “Selections” alone) PS Alternative 1.AAP for the compilation: Record a conventional collective title followed by "Selections." 2.AAP (Analytic): Give an authorized access point for the first or predominant work (See PS 25.1)PS 25.1 – Exceptions: anthologies of poetry, hymnals, conference proceedings, journals, interviews, etc.

Applying RDA Example: 1. AAP for the compilation: record a conventional collective title followed by "Selections." (PS Alternative)PS Alternative a)Two or more but not all the works of one creator in a particular form: The best short stories of Jack London. Thorndike, Me. : ǂb G.K. Hall, ǂc AAP: London, Jack, ǂd Short stories. ǂk Selections b)Two or more but not all the works of one creator in various forms: Afternoon of an author : ǂb a selection of uncollected stories and essays / ǂc by F. Scott Fitzgerald ; with an introduction and notes by Arthur Mizener. New York : ǂb Collier Books : ǂb Macmillan, ǂc AAP: Fitzgerald, F. Scott ǂq (Francis Scott), ǂd Works. ǂ Selections. ǂf 1987

Applying RDA (Cont’d) Example: 2. AAP (Analytic): Give an authorized access point for the first or predominant work (PS Alternative, also see PS 25.1):PS AlternativePS # $a Miller, Arthur, $d $a Plays. $k Selections $a Two plays / $c Arthur Miller # $a The Archbishop’s ceiling – The American clock $a Miller, Arthur, $d $t Archbishop’s ceiling. * $a Miller, Arthur, $d $t American clock. * 2 nd 700 not a core requirement but helpful to the user
