RDA When to apply? Is the compilation known by a title? YES – Apply RDA for works created after 1500: choose as the preferred title the title in the original language by which the work has become known either through use in resources embodying the work or in reference sources – Apply for works created before NO, use a conventional collective title (CCT) – Complete works (RDA ): Works – Complete works in a single form (RDA ): Poems, etc – Other compilations of two or more works (RDA ): Works. Selections. Poems (etc.). Selections.

RDA When to apply—LC Interpretation Moved away from LCRI 25.10, no longer ask if it is a distinctive title Accordingly, LC also modified LC Classification and Shelflising Manual 633 Literary Authors Subarrangement of Works, 1b. Under AACR2: Separate works. Use for individual works, as well as for collections consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that are being published for the first time while the author is still living (disregarding previous publication in journals or periodicals). Under RDA: Separate works. Use for individual works, as well as for collections that have not been assigned an RDA conventional title because the collection has become known by its title. Note: Until 2013, collections consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that were published for the first time while the author was still living (disregarding previous publication in journals or periodicals) were classed as Separate works. That distinction no longer applies.

RDA : How to Determine “known by a title” So, how do you determine it is known by a title LC Interpretation (based on its training materials) – Commonly known: Preferred title is already established under its original title – If “this is the first publication of that compilation, do not consider the question of ‘commonly known’ and add a 240 with a conventional collective title.” UCSD alternative – A compilation consisting of works, such as poems, stories, etc., that is being published for the first time, and – Title is known by its author, publishers, readers, on the web, in a bookstore, etc.
