New Programs Federal TEACH Grant New York State Math and Science Teaching Incentive Scholarship Federal Loan Forgiveness

TEACH Grant TEACH stands for Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Established in summer, 2008 Provides grants of up to $ per year For both graduate and undergraduate study

TEACH Grant Eligibility Requirements Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Do not have to demonstrate financial need Be a US Citizen or eligible non-citizen Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in a postsecondary educational institution that has chosen to participate in the TEACH Grant Program Be enrolled in coursework necessary to begin a career in teaching or plan to complete the coursework Score above the 75 th percentile on ACT or SATs - OR – maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA Sign a TEACH agreement to Serve

TEACH Grant Conditions In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant. IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You must then repay this loan to the Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant was disbursed.

TEACH GRANT High Need Field The Following are Teacher Subject Shortage Areas: –Bilingual Education and English Language Acquisition –Foreign Language –Mathematics –Reading Specialist –Science –Special Education –Other identified teacher shortage areas as of the time you begin teaching in that field To access teacher subject shortage areas please go to:

Schools Serving Low-income Students Schools serving low-income students include any elementary or secondary school that is listed in the department of Education’s Annual Directory of Designated Low-Income Schools For Teacher Cancellation Benefits. We will keep a list of students who are interested You will need to complete Entrance Counseling You will need to complete a service agreement You must meet the criteria listed above We will begin to make awards and notify you as soon as we are able to begin doing so.

NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Scholarships Offered to encourage students to pursue careers as secondary math and science teachers (grades 7-12). Program provides awards to students attending school at the undergraduate and/or graduate degree level in exchange for five years of full-time employment as secondary education math or science teachers.

NYS Math and Science Incentive Scholarship Eligibility Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen Be attending a college located in New York State Be matriculated in an approved undergraduate or graduate program at a degree granting institution in New York State leading to a career as a secondary education math or science teacher Have cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher Must not be in default of a student loan Must not have a service obligation under another program Execute a Service Contract in which you agree to work for five years as a secondary school math or science teacher. NYS Math and Science Incentive Scholarship Awards Receive an annual award for full-time study equal to the annual tuition charged to NYS residents (currently $ for undergraduates) Awards will be paid directly to the schools on behalf of the students upon the successful completion of each academic year. Successful completion means the applicant must have been in full time attendance (12 credits or more per semester). Have earned at least 27 credits hours or the equivalent during the academic year in a course of study leading to a secondary education degree in the fields of math or science Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 for the academic year Can receive for four academic years of full-time undergraduate study Can receive for one year of full-time graduate study Applications available in January of 2009

NYS Math and Science Incentive Scholarship Process Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Apply for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) Non residents of New York State may contact the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) Scholarship Unit at for a Scholarship and Grant Payment Application

Loan Forgiveness Certain teachers can have a portion of their Federal Stafford loans forgiven through the Federal Loan Forgiveness Program for Teachers.

Loan Forgiveness Eligibility To be eligible, teachers must meet the following requirements: –You must have borrowed a Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL); and –You must have an outstanding loan balance which began on or after October 1, 1998; and –You must not be in default on the loan for which you seek forgiveness; and –You must have worked full-time as an elementary or secondary school teacher for five consecutive, complete school years, at least one of which was after the academic year, in a designated school that qualifies for loan cancellation under the Perkins Loan Program For more information please visit the following website: cancelstaff.jsp
