North Carolina Teacher Retention Data Ann Bullock Louis Warren Department of Curriculum and Instruction & The Office of Teacher Education College of Education East Carolina University

Broad Research Questions Are any North Carolina school systems retaining new hires for four or more years at a rate of 66.7% or better? If so, what practice are these systems using to retain these teachers?

Data Framework New teacher hires retention by North Carolina school systems Hiring years of teachers: Data were divided into three categories

Data Categories Three Categories – Teachers with no experience [primarily those through a traditional teacher preparation program] – Teachers with experience [experience somewhere in the nation] – Teachers who were hired as lateral entry

Analysis Decisions – Systems were identified that kept 2/3 of their new teacher hires that began a 2 nd year in each category – Systems were identified that kept new teacher hires that began a 5 th year with that system – Systems were identified that kept new teacher hires for 3 of the 4 years continuously at a rate of 66.7% or greater

What was discovered from the Data? Out of the 115 North Carolina School Systems: 71 systems kept new hires with no experience for a second year 43 systems kept new hires with experience for a second year 20 systems kept new hires with lateral entry licensure for a second year

You Predict…… Predict how many of the school systems kept these new hires for the 4 th year

New Hires Retention at the end of 4 th Year: No Experience Out of the 71 systems that kept new hires with no experience for a 2 nd year, 5 systems retained those original new hires with no experience at a rate of 66.7% at the end of their four years

New Hires Retention at the end of 4 th Year: Teachers with Experience Out of the 43 systems that kept new hires with experience for a second year, 3 systems retained these original new hires with experience at the end of their 4 th year

New Hires Retention at the end of 4 th Year: Lateral Entry New Hires Out of the 20 systems that kept lateral entry new hires for a second year, 1 system retained these original new hires with a lateral entry license at a rate of 66.7% rate at the end of their 4 th year.

Combining Categories Data There were 8 North Carolina school systems that kept all three categories of teachers at a rate of 66.7% or greater for a second year.

The Eight School Systems Duplin Forsyth Granville Henderson Kings Mountain McDowell Montgomery Moore

Retention Relationships among the Eight Systems There were no retention relationships among the eight systems based on: – Teacher stipends – School violence – School size – Location

Retention Relationships among the Eight Systems We could not find any variables that makes a difference among the eight systems

3 rd Year Retention No school system in North Carolina retained new teacher hires in all three categories at rate of 66.7% or greater at the end of the 3 rd year.
