Lauren McDaniel, Block 2 A

 Clean is a story about 5 teenagers in high school that are in rehab for various different addictions and life issues.  Kelly, Christopher, Eva, Jason, and Olivia are all very different people, but they somehow become friends. Really good friends in fact.

 Kelly is very beautiful. She had a great life before her addiction of cocaine and alcohol took over. Her parents are really the sweetest parents in the world, but she’s overly jealous of her twin sisters with down syndrome.  Jason is very rude and mean, but has a heart deep down. It’s obvious that he got it from his military dad who ridiculed Jason for most of his life. The treatment from his dad worsened when Jason got drunk while watching his little sister and she fell down the stairs. She now has permanent brain damage.

 Christopher is homeschooled. He has a very obese mother who couldn’t even walk up the stairs to the second floor of their house. Christopher knew that because of this she would never catch him and Todd, a friend from down the street, doing meth.  Eva is very different from the others. Her mom died and her dad wasn’t really there for her after the death of her mother. Eva turned to getting high and drinking. It took her dad quite some time to realize that she had developed an addiction.

 Olivia is the most different from the others. She didn’t really have an “addiction.” Olivia had an eating disorder. Besides not eating, she took diet pills that her mom provided for her. It wasn’t even her parents who noticed she had a problem. Olivia realized her problem on the day she passed out while running. The truth is, she never had true parents or friends until the day she decided to go get help at rehab.  In this story, all of the main characters are protagonists.

Christopher Eva Jason Kelly Olivia

 Kelly, Christopher, Eva, Olivia, and Jason are all involved and are in the same group in rehab. They all have an addiction ranging from alcohol to crystal meth.  The teenagers do not believe they have a disease. They just feel as if they did something that made them feel good and got them away from reality. If they think this way, will they ever come clean and get sober?

 Kelly’s parents aren’t the one’s who sent Kelly to rehab but they should get the award for the “sweetest parents in the world.” They still love and care for Kelly. They are antagonists but still love their daughter.  Jason’s dad is a retired military man. His dad really doesn’t show that he loves his son whatsoever because of what he did to his sister. He is an antagonist.  Christopher’s mom is morbidly obese and still thinks her son is a perfect little angel.  Eva’s dad is a doctor with a PhD, an antagonist and has been a drinker ever since his wife died. He never really noticed what Eva was doing.

 Laura Newcomb says this book is in the latter of making you say “wow,” and then responding with “wow.” She says this isn’t really an attention seeker book, but balanced perfectly to where you get to capture the personality of each character with elegance and insight.  clean clean

 Zoe thinks that this novel was beautifully written, and not in the usual way. She says this book was so different to others. It wasn’t just a book about addicts, it was so much more. She loved how strong Amy Reed’s writing style was and how she captured each characters personality.  7/clean-by-amy-reed.html 7/clean-by-amy-reed.html

 Clean was one of the best novels I’ve read so far. Amy Reed has a way of words that keeps you interested and intrigued. The idea of Clean was so different from other novels because it had a very risky topic. This novel kept you on the edge and wanting to know what would happen to the teenagers. Would they get sober? This novel is a must read!
