The Man Who Wasn't There Trailer analysis

The Man Who Wasn't There Trailer The trailer starts off by introducing the film company followed by its awards, we next see a close up of the fringe of a boys head, and a the body of a man in the background who is a barber. Next we see the barber finishing off a series of different hair styles, (flattop, ivy, junior contour etc.) as the shots change regularly there is a voiceover talking about what hairstyles young people ask for, by the tone and the speech of the voice it is suggested that the barber is the one who is speaking, for example “me, I don't talk much, I just cut the hair”. Next we see an over the shoulder shot of the barber puffing out smoke. The smoke seems to role out of his mouth quite slowly, this introduces a title into the smoke. This would be an idea to consider for out trailer as use of putting the title over the smoke keep the spacing and the balance of shot.

The Man Who Wasn't There Trailer The next part of trailer is the most important, we see a shot, then within a second, the shot dissolves into the next, this happens right the way through the trailer, but this is not the only trailer that does this, In most Film Noir trailers, it follows the same trend of brief 1 second shots dissolving into the next, over the majority of the trailer. The shots contain close ups of detail, mainly facial expressions of many characters. There also long shots of characters walking, and point of views, such as walking down a corridor. Through the length of the trailer there is always speech, mostly the barber describing his feelings and what is happening, but sometime we hear speech from another character before seeing him on screen. There is a backing tune, which sounds like a piano, its played on high notes and is very simple, it accompanies the slow dissolving shots that blend into each other. Furthermore this is something to consider in our piece as most successful trailer’s soundtrack match the tempo of what is on screen, (for example, fast action film would have a fast tempo with a distinctive beat which builds to a climax).

The Man Who Wasn't There Trailer This trailer has many techniques and transitions that are used regularly in Film Noir, it would be worth considering using these techniques when editing. But in order to get the right effect when editing, we need the foundations of this and that is getting a range of shots and the amount of shots, as this allows us to have more to work with when we have finished filming. The dissolves between the shots is a must, it runs through most Film Noir trailers and is apart of the longest part of the trailer. The voiceover is very sophisticated and is mostly spoken in 3 rd person, this allows more analytical description of the characters and the setting. The soundtrack is soft and smooth, complementing the tempo of the trailer to create a certain style of mood. The trailer uses different techniques to bring together to create a certain feel or mood of the trailer.

The Man Who Wasn't There Trailer in The Man Who Wasn’t There, it is sadness and confusion. The tone of the voice and the characterisation delivers a very un happy outlook and the soft music that works with the dissolving transitions would implement some sort of confusion and sadness within this. In our trailer, me must use different aspects to provide an outcome there is no point putting fast music to slow footage, just because we like the music. Everything that is put or used in a trailer is their for a reason. The Man Who Wasn’t There Trailer
