1 John 5:16-17

1 John 5:16-17 “If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.”

The sin leading unto death John 3:19 Jesus said, “And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil.” Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is death.” 1 Corinthians 6:9 “Do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?” 2 Peter 2:20-22

The sin not unto death 1 John 1:5-2:6 “And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you…” 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

The sin not unto death 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 “But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness.” Ephesians 5:8-12

What is walking in the light?

1. He hates sin. Psalm 101:3-4 “I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not fasten its grip on me. A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know no evil.” Psalm 119:104 “From Thy precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.”

1. He hates sin. Job 1:1 “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.” Romans 7:14-20 The apostle Paul struggled with sin, but his committing sin was contrary to what he wanted to do in his life.

2. He does not continue in sin. 1 John 3:6-10

2. He does not continue in sin. 1 John 3:6-10

3. He confesses his sin. 1 John 1:6 “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” 1 John 1:8 “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

3. He confesses his sin.

3. He confesses his sin. Proverbs 28:13 “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.”

3. He confesses his sin. Psalm 32:3-6 “When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer.  I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD; and You forgave the guilt of my sin.  Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You may be found.”

3. He confesses his sin. Hebrews 4:14-16 James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

3. He confesses his sin. Galatians 6:1-2 “Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ.”

The bad news: We sin.
