John 16 – Five promises As Jesus prepared to give himself to the cross, He ministers to the disciples with 5 promises – He would send them the Comforter – He would visit them again after His resurrection – That their prayers would yield peace for them – That He was returning to His Father – That no matter what challenges they face, by virtue of His death and resurrection, they would have peace

Verse 1-6 He prepares them for the adversity that they will face He promises that they will have difficulty They are sorrowful to hear what will become the best news of their life!

Verse 7-11 When I leave, I will send the Helper, Comforter, Teacher The Holy Spirit will do three specific things – Convict the world of sin – Convict the believer of righteousness – Declare the ruler of this world guilty

Verse The Holy Spirit will become your leader He will be the discerner of truth He will speak the things of God to us in Jesus absence He can do it for all of us, wherever we are, all the time

Verse A reiteration of His plans and why they are necessary The analogy of childbirth An establishment of the power of His Name once He has returned to the right hand of the Father The promise of asking in His name, and a promise of fulfillment

Verse I was with the Father, I left the Father to come here, and now I go back to the Father With a tinge of pride, the disciples respond – Oh now we get it! Jesus cautions them – don’t act like you have it all figured out, your about to bail on me I will give my life so you have peace, even as you navigate tribulation
