In the last three years ( ) permanent Maldivian staff has reduced from 30,000 to about 24,000 and has been steadily replaced by contract and temporary staff. Contract employment is becoming more prevalent. To some extent this is nothing new. Contract employment especially in the education and labour field has long been a part of the Maldivian economy but the face of contract employment is changing.
