When faced with temptation, trust in Jesus! Redeemer Lutheran Church Sunday, February 17

Welcome to Redeemer! Lent is a time of reflection and repentance for sin. Today God shows us the serious consequences of disobeying his commands. But he also shows us the Savior who overcame sin for us and gives us eternal confidence.

For Our Guests If you have questions, let us try to help. Speak with an usher, greeter, or the person next to you. If youd like to learn more about Redeemer and its ministry, please talk to Pastor Wolfe or a church member after the service.

Childrens Message Each week, our younger worshipers are invited to the front of church before the sermon hymn to hear a special message for them from Pastor Wolfe.

Need to Know whats going on? Check the church calendar, Get access to sermons, and more. Our church website has the info you need right at your fingertips

Prayer before Worship Father in heaven, forgive my sins of the past week. Help me today to turn aside from temptation and worldly desires and return to you. Bless my songs of praise today and lead me to your righteousness and peace. In Jesus name, Amen.

Jesus, Grant that Balm and Healing CW #121 Verses 1-5 Text: Johann Heermann, , Setting: DER AM KREUZ Tune: Johann B. König,

Verse 1: Jesus, grant that balm and healing In your holy wounds I find, Evry hour that I am feeling Pains of body and of mind.

Verse 1: Should some evil thought within Tempt my treachrous heart to sin, Show the peril, and from sinning Keep me from its first beginning.

Verse 2: Should some lust or sharp temptation Fascinate my sinful mind, Let me think about your passion, And new courage I shall find.

Verse 2: Or should Satan press me hard Let me then be on my guard, Saying, Christ for me was wounded, That the tempter flee confounded.

Verse 3: If the world my heart entices With the broad and easy road, With seductive, sinful vices, Let me think about the load.

Verse 3: You were willing to endure; Then Ill flee all thoughts impure, Mastering each wild temptation, Calm in prayer and meditation.

Verse 4: Evry wound that pains or grieves me By your wounds, Lord, is made whole When Im weak, your cross revives me, Granting new life to my soul.

Verse 4: Yes, your comfort renders sweet Evry bitter cup I meet; For your all-atoning passion Has procured my souls salvation.

Verse 5: O my God, My Rock and Tower, Grant that in your death I trust, Knowing death has lost his power Since you crushed him in the dust.

Verse 5: Savior, let your agony Ever help and comfort me; When I die be my protection, Light and life and resurrection.

Opening Verses Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. Pastor: Lord, how I love your law! All: I meditate on it all day long.

Opening Verses Pastor: Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, All: for they are ever with me. Pastor: I have more insight than all my teachers All: for I meditate on your statutes.

Opening Verses Pastor: How sweet are your words to my taste, All: sweeter than honey to my mouth! Pastor: All Scripture is God- breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

Opening Verses All: so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Pastor: Yet so often we have despised Gods Word and failed to gladly hear and learn it. For this and all our sins, we bow before God and humbly ask his forgiveness.

Confession of Sin All: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.

Confession of Sin All: But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

(Pastor announces our forgiveness) All: Amen.

Gods Word to His People Luke 4: 1-13 Jesus faces temptation

Childrens Message

Jesus, My Great High Priest CW # 359 Verses 1- 4 Text: Isaac Watts, , abr., alt. Setting: BEVAN Tune: John Goss,

Verse 1: Jesus, my great High Priest, Offered his blood and died; My guilty conscience seeks No sacrifice beside. His powrful blood did once atone, And now it pleads before the throne.

Verse 2: To Christ, my substitute, Will I commit my cause; He answers and fulfills His Fathers broken laws. Behold my soul at freedom set – My Jesus paid the dreadful debt!

Verse 3: My advocate appears For my defense on high; A gracious Father hears And lays his thunder by. Not all that hell or sin can say Shall turn his heart, his love, away.

Verse 4: Should all the hosts of death And powrs of hell unknown Put their most dreadful forms Of rage and mischief on, I shall be safe, for Christ displays Superior powr and guardian grace.

Gods Word to His People Hebrews 4: Jesus is our great high priest

Lords Prayer All: Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle CW #122 Verses 1-5 Text: Verantius Fortunatus, c Setting: FORTUNATUS NEW Tune: Carl F. Schalk, b. 1929

Verse 1: Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle; Sing the ending of the fray. Now above the cross, the trophy, Sound the loud triumphant lay. Tell how Christ, the world's Redeemer, As a victim won the day.

Verse 2: Tell how, when at length the fullness Of th' appointed time was come, He, the Word, was born of woman, Left for us his Father's home, Blazed the path of true obedience, Shone as light amidst the gloom.

Verse 3: Thus, with thirty years accomplished, He went forth from Nazareth, Destined, dedicated, willing, Did his work and met his death; Like a lamb he humbly yielded On the cross his dying breath.

Verse 4: Faithful cross, true sign of triumph, Be for all the noblest tree; None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit your equal be, Symbol of the world's redemption, For your burden makes us free.

Verse 5: Unto God be praise and glory; To the Father and the Son, To th' eternal Spirit honor Now and evermore be done -- Praise and glory in the highest While the timeless ages run.

Silent Prayer
