Lesson 1.1- Variables and Expressions, pg. 6 Objective: To write mathematical expressions for verbal expressions and vice versa.

Vocabulary Variables: symbols used to represent unspecified numbers or values. Algebraic expressions: consists of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations.

Factors: quantities being multiplied. Product: the result of multiplication. 5 × 8 = 40 Power: an expression like xn, and is read “x to the nth power.” xn product Factors exponent base

Base: number being used as a factor. Exponent: indicates the number of times the base is used as a factor. 43= 4×4×4 =64 Evaluate: find the value.

Key Words for Basic Operations Add Subtract Multiply Divide Sum Minus Times Quotient Plus Less than Product Divided by Increase Decrease Twice More than difference Squared- raise a number to the 2nd power Cubed- raise a number to the 3rd power

Ex. 1: Write an algebraic expression for each verbal expression. Five less than a number c c - 5 2. 9 plus the product of 2 and the number d 9 + 2d Three eighths of the original volume v ⅜v

Ex. 2: Write each expression algebraically. The product of ¾ and a to the seventh power. ¾a7 The sum of 11 and x to the third power. 11 + x³

Ex. 3: Evaluate each expression. 34 8² 26

Ex. 4: Write a verbal expression for each algebraic expression. 1. 2.
