Online Databases for Academic Libraries Academic Search Premier & Business Source Premier

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Academic Search Premier & Business Source Premier Comprehensive Indexes of Scholarly Journals # of Peer Reviewed Journals Indexed & Abstracted # of Serials Indexed & Abstracted Academic Search Premier (ASP) Business Source Premier (BSP) 8,2976,919 10,1841,778 ASP contains A&I for 100+ journals back to 1975 or further BSP contains A&I for 352 journals back to 1965 or the first published issue Database * Figures as of April 24, 2006

Online Databases for Academic Libraries High Quality Abstracts & Bibliographic Records Author Supplied Abstracts are now provided for the vast majority of peer-reviewed journals indexed in ASP (more than 85%) and BSP (more than 81%) Other articles contain abstracts written by educated professionals Author Supplied Keywords are provided for hundreds of peer-reviewed journals Author affiliations & author addresses are provided when available Indexing is available by thesaurus terms and: Company, NAICS, FASB, Ticker Symbol, Geographic Location, People, etc.

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Business Source Contains a High Quality Thesaurus 12,000 business-specific terms Ability to Explode Searches (similar to MEDLINE)

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Enhanced Bibliographic Record – Business Source Premier author addresses thesaurus terms author supplied keywords author supplied abstracts

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Academic Search Premier 1,000 peer-reviewed journals have searchable cited references starting with January 2003 issues (or earlier) Includes the 500 most used scholarly journals in ASP based on worldwide usage statistics Business Source Premier 1,206 peer-reviewed journals have searchable cited references starting with January 2003 issues (or earlier) Only 234 journals are contained in ISI’s Business Collection Searchable Cited References (with links to full text)

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Searchable Cited Reference with links to the full text of the original cited work (when available) Times Cited in this Database provides a list of all other papers in the database that cite this work (with links to the full text when available)

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Full Text

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Nearly all aggregated databases have embargo periods on some full-text journals All journals with embargo periods in EBSCO databases are also embargoed in competing databases (or not in those databases at all) All embargoed journals have current abstracts which can link to the current full text via the e-journal (if your library subscribes) [sometimes the EBSCO backfile will be greater than the e-journal backfile] For more information see: “Academic Journal Embargoes and Full Text Databases” By: Brooks, Sam The Library Quarterly (University of Chicago Press) July 2003, Volume 73, Issue 3, pp [Reprints available upon request] Embargoes

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Unfortunately, everlasting embargoes do exist “Unnaturally Halted” is the term used to describe journals impaired in this way These journals are different than those that have ceased naturally (i.e. the publisher stops publishing articles) This is the most severe form of embargo because no new full text articles are ever added again Vendor title lists include an embargo column, but unnaturally halted titles are not marked as embargoed In reality, the embargo column for these titles should probably include the infinite symbol Do Everlasting Embargoes Exist?

Online Databases for Academic Libraries Business Source is the standard in the world’s top business schools and universities US News & World Report: America’s Best Graduate Schools Harvard University 2.Stanford University 3.University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) 4.Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan) 4.Northwestern University (Kellogg) 6.University of Chicago 7.Columbia University 7.University of California - Berkeley (Haas) 9.Dartmouth College (Tuck) 10.University of California - Los Angeles (Anderson) All of the above use Business Source.
