What Do I Do at CNS? CNS Information Officer. Editor of CNS Dispatch newsletter and HyperDispatch webzine. Info in paper and electronic formats. Don’t like fiddling with HTML any more.

Cool Web Resources for Non-Programmers Question: How can a non-programmer build “out of the ordinary” web pages? Answer: Use state-of-the-art software developed by programmers and designers, e.g.,web page editors, ready-made Java applets/JavaScripts, and web graphics programs.

Web Editors (e.g., MS FrontPage) Why use a web page editor? Productivity and empowerment! One popular package is MS FrontPage for Windows and Macintosh. Combines website server, website management and web page creation.

MS FrontPage Personal Web Server Run the Personal Web Server on your desktop. For mission-critical websites, it’s best viewed as a development/backup environment. Host them on GPU or a departmental server.

Personal Web Server Features Automatic full-text searching. Create web-based discussion groups with a wizard; anonymous FTP site. Hit counters; automatic updating of “Last Modified” message. Forms handling with no programming.

Website Management Features FrontPage Explorer - create, import, and publish websites. - spell-check websites; search/replace. - user and group ID administration; set access permissions for websites. - auto-update changed hyperlinks. - remote creation/administration.

FrontPage Editor Features Resembles a word processor interface. Wizards for special types of pages like on-line guestbooks, framesets, and employee directories. Easy table and forms creation. Built-in image Image Composer.

Advanced FrontPage Editor Features Shared Borders save a lot of time. Navigation Bars save a lot of effort. Automatic table of contents. Built-in imagemap hotspot editor. Built-in stylesheet/theme editors.

Advanced FrontPage Editor Features Hover buttons/marquees.Hover buttons Dynamic HTML - Animation and page transitions based on JavaScript. Beware of the vendors’ (intentional?) Java/JavaScript incompatibilities. Users pay for corporate shenanigans.

Java Applets Small programs called.class files that execute within the web browser..class files can reside in same directory as the HTML docs and are referenced in the HTML via parameters. Should work with all Java-enabled browsers; but test before unleashing.

Customizable Java Applets Available for free or modestly priced. Customizable applets can be for education, presentation or navigation. Example 1 Intel presentation applet.Intel presentation applet Example 2 Intel presentation applet.Intel presentation applet

Customizable Java Applets Example of a $30 navigation appletnavigation applet Message Flipper applet Pictures and Message applet Switch Menu applet Sliding Menu applet

Web Graphics Programs Packages are optimized for typical web graphics production tasks. One example is Adobe ImageStyler, a scaled-down version of Photoshop. Apply ready-made shapes, textures, styles, and web-safe colors.

ImageStyler JavaScript Mouse-Over Events Apply four different states to the text or object: noAction; onMouseOver onMouseDown; onMouseOut Or, cut-and-paste HTML/ JavaScript and create your array of graphics.
