Are you ready for a new story? The next three slides are clues for you… What do think our story will be about?

Monitor and Clarify When something confuses you while you are reading… You should stop to discuss the word or phrase that was confusing. You can talk about it with: *your teacher *your friend *your mom, dad, grandma or grandpa *spend time thinking it through

Monitor and Clarify Good readers do NOT simply skip it and keep going. Good readers stop to figure out the difficult material.

Purpose… Remember the theme of our unit… Keep Trying! Look for ways any of the characters keep trying throughout our story…

Check for understanding… What does the ant try to do in this story and why? What does the ant find out when he climbs to the top of the pine tree at the end of the story ? What lesson do you learn about trying from reading this story? Why do you think the old ant doesn’t say anything to the young ant?

Let’s sequence the story… * Remember SEQUENCE means: The order the events in the story take place. * This helps good readers follow the writer’s line of thought and helps you remember the story! Let’s get started…

Tell me what happens first. The ant climbed the tallest blade of grass he could find.

What happened next? The ant climbed up the dandelion.

Then what happened? The ant climbed up the stem of a rose.

Next what happened? The ant climbed up the sunflower.

Then what happened next? The ant climbed up the apple tree?

What does the ant do next? The ant climbs up the maple tree.

Then the ant… climbs up the oak tree.

What does the ant do last? Finally, the ant climbs the pine tree.

What is the very last thing that happens to the ant in our story? The ant has grown older and wiser and he meets a young ant on the way down the pine tree.

Main Idea and Details… An author always has something specific to say to the reader. The author may state the main idea different ways, but the reader should always be able to tell what the writing is about. Details strengthen the main point. The author gives you details to help you understand the main idea.
