This mountain region is found in extreme northwestern Georgia. It is the mountainous region with many rivers and streams flowing through them. It marks the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. Famous Landmarks are Lookout and Sand mountains, Cloudland Canyon. Plants include- Maple, birch, beech, hemlock trees, and also Appalachian Oak Forests cover the most of the region Wild life include Deer, Toad, Frogs, Eagles, Turtles, Foxes, and Herons. People like to visit Rock City, Rev. Finster’s Paradise Garden, Appalachian trail You can go hang gliding, hiking, camping, and whitewater rafting in this area. The smallest region of Georgia. Famous cities-Fort Oglethorpe, Lafayette Appalachian Plateau

Blue Ridge This is in the Northeastern part of Georgia. Wild life includes- Black bear, Raccoon, White tail deer, Grouse and salamanders etc. It consists of irregular sequence of mountains, ridges, and basins. People come to visit- Brasstown Bald Peak- the highest point in GA, Birthplace of Cabbage Patch Doll in Cleveland, Cornelia for World’s Largest Apple, Georgia Guidestones. Blue Ridge Mountains and Cohutta mountains make the most of the province. The famous landmark is one of the Georgia’s natural wonders–Tallulah Gorge and Falls named “Niagara of the South.” Famous cities- Dahlonega, Brasstown Bald, Blue Ridge Things to do- Whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking The Cherokee Indians lived in these mountains. Trees like Hickory, Oak, Golden Rod, Witch Hazel, and Iris are found.

Coastal Plains The Coastal Plains are located in the Southern part of Georgia. It is a low, flat region of well-drained, gently rolling hills and poorly drained flat woods. Famous cities- Savannah, Valdosta Known for its flatlands, marshes, and swamps The largest swamp in North America- Okefenokee Swamp is in this region. Animals include-wild hogs, rabbits, alligator snapping turtles, deer, and snakes. Plants- Oak, Wax Myrtle, Wire grass, and Pine tree. Famous places to visit-Squares and World Globe Storage Tank, Fort Pulaski in Savannah, Cursed Pillar in Augusta, Jimmy Carter Peanut Statue in Plains, and Radium Springs. Famous Rivers- Flint, Savannah, St. Mary’s River, Oconee, and Altamaha river Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Piedmont This region consist of series of rolling hills and occasional isolated mountains. It is located in the north-central part of GA. Piedmont means “foot of the mountains”. Rivers and ravines are found throughout this area. We live in Piedmont area. Famous cities- Atlanta-the capital of GA, Duluth, Suwanee, Marietta, Athens, Columbus, Augusta Piedmont is famous for red clay. Famous Landmarks- Stone Mountain and Warm Springs. Animals- Bald eagle, opossums, raccoons, deer, and screech owl. The plants include Oak, Hickory, and Pine, sweet gum, beach, red maple, elms, and birches. Famous tourist places-Cyclorama, World of Coca Cola, Georgia Aquarium, Gravity Hills, Lake Lanier Islands, Uncle Remus Museum, Providence Canyon- Little Grand Canyon in Columbus Famous Rivers-Chattahoochee, Flint River Granite, quartz, and marble is found in this area.

Valley and Ridge This region occupies most of the northwestern Georgia. Low open valleys and narrow ridges run parallel and has lots of waterfalls. Most of the land is covered with forests. People visit this place for bird watching. Wild life includes deer, opossum, striped bobcats, Grizzly bears, and rattlesnakes. Plants varied from place to place based on the area moisture, soil, and elevation. Famous Landmark - Amicalola Falls- which means “tumbling waters.” It is state’s highest fall with a total drop of 729 feet. Amicalola Falls are in Amicalola State Park, one of Georgia’s most popular state parks. Famous places to visit -Chickamauga Valley, Armuchee Ridges, and the Great Valley. Cities- Rome and Dalton-the carpet capital in the world is this region

Fall Line It is about 20 mile wide geological boundary between Columbus to Augusta. It separates Piedmont from Coastal region. Its name arises from the occurrence of waterfalls and rapids as the elevation drops and water moves faster when you come inland. The differences in the geology of north and south of fall line give rise to differences in soil type, variety of plant life and wild life. This has been great for the transportation and hydroelectric power and trade.
