4 The Appalachian Plateau Region The Appalachian Plateau Region is the smallest of the five regions. Smallest region 1800-2000 feet above sea level Limestone caves Deep canyons Rock formations Avg. temps. range from 36-70 degrees It is the northwestern part of the state Lookout Mountain Narrow valleys and wooded ridges Cloudland Canyon Sand Mountain Hang gliding, hiking, camping, white water rafting.

5 Ridge and Valley Region Forest and pastures dominate Heavily forested Lots of waterfalls Flat and fertile farmland Apple orchids Over 80 inches of rain a year Avg. temps. range from 36-70 degrees Avg. snowfall is 12 inches Located between the Plateau and Blue Ridge regions Very few people live here Dalton is the carpet capitol of the world Amicalola Falls – state’s highest waterfall

6 Blue Ridge Region Highest and largest group of mountains in Georgia These mountains are 1 st barrier to warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico Here precipitation can reach over 80 inches per year Avg. temps. range from 36 to 70 degrees It is located in the northeastern part of the state Marble and gold are natural resources found here Rushing rivers provide hydro-electric power to the state Tallulah Gorge and Falls, “Niagara of the South” It’s one of the wonders of Georgia

7 Piedmont Region It’s a hilly part of Georgia Piedmont means “foot of the mountain” Located between the northern mountains and southern plains Red clay hills About ½ of the state’s population lives here About 70 inches of precipitation falls each year Avg. temps. range from 40 to 70 degrees Two main rivers (Chattahoochee and the Flint river) Warm Springs and Stone Mountain, natural wonders of Georgia, are here Cotton belt before the Civil War Elberton (Granite capital of the world) Includes Atlanta, Athens, Milledgeville Known for wheat, soy beans, corn, poultry, and cattle Popular tourist site

8 Coastal Plain Region Flat lands, marshes, and swamps Occupies 3/5 of the state, largest region Includes inner and outer costal plains Precipitation is about 5o inches per year Avg. temps. range from 40 to 80 degrees Southern most region of the state Main rivers include Flint, Savannah, St. Mary’s, Oconee, Ocmulgee, Altamaha River Okefenokee Swamp, largest swamp North America is located here (It is as big as Rhode Island) Radium Springs located here Providence Canyon, “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon” Includes Savannah, Tybee Island
