Modifiers What does it mean to modify? To describe the word or to make its meaning more definite.

Modifiers What is an adjective? A word that modifies a noun or a pronoun.

Modifiers What is an adverb? A word that usually modifies a verb.

Modifiers: Regular Comparisons There are two degrees of comparison: 1.Comparative Degree 2.Superlative Degree

Modifiers: Regular Comparisons 1.Comparative Degrees: form by adding –er OR the word more or less. –Use when comparing two things –Never use both Example: slower (yes) more dangerous (yes) more slower (no)

Modifiers: Regular Comparisons 1.Superlative Degrees: form by adding –est OR the word most or least. –Use when comparing three or more things –Never use both Example: slowest (yes) most dangerous (yes) most slowest (no)

Modifiers One Syllable Words Words that are one syllable form the degrees of comparisons by adding –er or –est. Examples: smarter smartest

Modifiers Two Syllable Words Words that are two syllables do not form the degrees of comparisons in a consistent way. They can go either way! Examples: handsomer more festive

Modifiers Three Syllable Words Words that are three syllables form the degrees of comparisons by adding more/less or most/least. Examples: more/less dangerous most/least dangerous

Modifiers GOOD vs. WELL Good is an adjective. It can also follow a linking verb. Examples: She has a good grade. (good modifies grade) The soup smells good. (good is the linking verb)

Modifiers GOOD vs. WELL Well is an adverb. It can also follow an action verb. Example: He plays sports well. (well modifies the verb plays)

Modifiers GOOD vs. WELL The Exception: Well is used to refer to health. Example: She feels well today.
