Co-Teaching: What’s That?  Discuss with your neighbor any experiences that you have had with co- teaching.

Co-Teaching  Sharing the expertise of two or more professionals to create teaching and learning environment conducive to positive outcomes and teacher success.

Goals of Co-Teaching  Enabling all students to gain access to the curriculum.  Sharing responsibility for planning learning for all students.  Sharing classroom space to increase learning for teachers and students.  Providing specialized learning instructional strategies for all students.  Enriching learning experiences to address skills, interests, and learning styles.  Increasing student achievement by maximizing opportunities for student learning.

Making it Happen! 1. Establish a regular time to plan collaboratively. 2. Select an appropriate environment without distractions. 3. Save rapport building for another time. 4. Have an agenda and snacks. 5. Determine regular roles and responsibilities.

Making it Happen! 6. Divide and Conquer! 7. Keep a list of individual student concerns. 8. Build in regular time for assessment and feedback. 9. Document your planning and save it for future reference. 10. Use the what/how/who approach.

Planning Questions  What!  What standard does the lesson address?  What objective does the lesson have?  What are the “big ideas” and “essential questions” for this lesson?  What are each teachers’ responsibilities for planning, bringing materials, implementing, and assessing?  How!  How comfortable do we both feel with the new content?  What co-teaching approach will be most effective for the beginning of the lesson? Middle of the lesson? End of the lesson?  Who!  Who might struggle with aspects of the lesson?  Who needs accommodations or modifications or adapted materials?  What additional types of differentiation strategies would make the lesson more interesting, motivating, enriching or accessible for all learners?  Who else may need to be included?

Getting Started…  Review the Top 12 Tips for Planning (p.23)  Review Teacher Tasks During Co-Teaching (p. 27)  Determine which tasks are suitable for the general educator and the special educator in your classroom  With your co-teacher, complete the Co- Teacher Tasks handout.
