Standards-Based Achievement Reporting The mission of Polk County Public Schools is to ensure rigorous, relevant learning experiences that result in high achievement for our students.

What are the main differences between the SBAR and a traditional report card? Progress will no longer be reported with: A, B, C, D, and U; or S/N Instead of subjects being graded – achievement of standards will be measured. Progress will reported 4 times a year based on the mastery of the entire standard. It will be a longer, more detailed report. If a skill or benchmark has been taught and your child still needs to learn it, that information will be noted on the report.

Achievement at the Time of the Report Tells you which benchmarks your child has been taught. Tells you which benchmarks your child has learned. BENCHMARKS (Specific Skills under each standard) Benchmarks are specific skills and are lettered: a, b, c, d, e, f, g  = Not taught this grading period  = Student did not master what was taught this grading period x = Student mastered what was taught this grading period + = Working beyond expectations for this grading period

Progress toward Grade Level Proficiency IS MY CHILD’S PROGRESS ON TRACK? YES = Progress is satisfactory for this point in the school year NO = Progress is NOT satisfactory for this point in the school year Tells you whether your student’s progress is “on track” to master this grade level’s standards. (not reported for 1 st quarter)

Year End Grade Level Proficiency 4 = Exceeds the standard (beyond end of year level expectations) 3 = Student work that demonstrates mastery of the entire standard (at end of year level) without teacher assistance. 2 = Student work that is progressing towards mastery of the standard. 1 = Student work demonstrates limited skills related to the standard. Note: 4 does not equal an “A,” 3 ≠ “B”…

Celebrating Academic Success on the SBAR October 12, 2014 To celebrate academic success look at your child’s benchmark grades. Students who have done an outstanding job this nine weeks will have: all taught benchmarks scored with an “X” ! Celebrate with your child who has earned all X’s…great job!

Which skills are essential for my child to master? NGSSS (Next Generation Sunshine State Standards)

What is a standard? It is the big concept being taught (like Reading Comprehension or Algebra). What are benchmarks? They are the specific skills under that standard/topic (like Makes Predictions or Identifies Patterns).

Which skills are being taught each 9 weeks? /, x, + Not every skill/benchmark is taught/ assessed every 9 weeks (teachers follow an instruction and assessment timeline). /, x, and + are based on what was learned each 9 week grading period.

How will I know what I need to help my child with at home? slashes / & 1’s Assessment is continual. Regression of skills is possible. (Example: Students can forget learned information naturally or through lack of practice.)

How will I know if my child is learning enough to be promoted? “difficulty meeting...” box Not reported on the 1 st grading period.

What does this look like? Makes predictions about a story »Teacher-student dialogue before reading book based on cover illustrations and title. You can do this at home each night.

When you get your child’s SBAR, do this together: Color all “+” blue, and color all “x” green, Color all “/ ” yellow. Blue and green = a nice job, Yellow = a concern.

W HAT IS K - RAC ? K-RAC lists expectations of the rigorous accelerated curriculum SBAR skills are listed on the SBAR report; K- RAC assumes that students have master the SBAR skills K-RAC skills are guided by the New Generation Sunshine State Standards K-RAC skills use higher level of cognitive complexity, critical thinking and application of skills NETS standards are used for technology

WHY K-RAC? In choosing Lincoln Avenue Academy, parents selected for their students a anticipation in the rigorous accelerated program K-RAC lists and provides parents with information on student’s progress toward basic standards of the rigorous accelerated curriculum K-RAC focuses on broad skills and concepts – for list of specific standards please refer to Sunshine State Standards ( for content areas and National Educational Technology Standard – NETS ( ww.iste.org)

HOW DOES K-RAC AFFECT MY CHILD? Provides parents with information of student’s progress in the rigorous, accelerated curriculum Provides a parent with information on areas of child’s strength and weaknesses Provides ongoing monitoring of higher level skills K-RAC is not used for promotion/retention purposes; promotion/retention is based on PCSB Pupil Progression Plan and the county SBAR report
