Presentation transcript:

Energy The ability to cause a change. Different forms of energy produce changes in different ways. Law of Conservation of Energy-Energy can be changed but never lost. Energy often needs to be transformed in order to produce a useful form of energy.

Types of Energy Potential Kinetic:  Stored energy due to position or chemical composition. Gravitational PE- Results from gravity (pulls toward the Earth). Elastic-Stretching or compressing. Chemical-Stored energy in the atomic bonds in molecules in food or fuel.  Energy of motion. Depends on mass & speed. Increases as mass increases. Increases as speed increases.

Forms of Energy Energy that moves an object. Ex. Mechanical Sound   Energy of vibrating particles in a solid, liquid, or gas. Sound needs a medium to travel through, cannot travel through a vacuum like space. Ex.

Forms of Energy Thermal Chemical The total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter. Heat from friction. Ex. Energy from the chemical composition of matter. The energy that is in the bonds that holds atoms together in a molecule. Ex.

Forms of Energy Electromagnetic Nuclear Energy transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves. Radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-ray and gamma. Ex. Energy from the nucleus of an atom. Fission-When a nuclei is split. Fusion- When two nuclei are joined. Ex.

Energy from the movement of electrons. Ex. Forms of Energy Electrical Energy from the movement of electrons. Ex.
