 “Creative Commons is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright.  We provide free licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work with the freedom the creator wants it to carry, so others can share, remix, use commercially, or any combination thereof.” 

 Why is Creative Commons important? › Copyright issues could be its own class. It is important while making media items accessible to remember the rules of copyright – especially when operating in a public space like the internet › Creative Commons provides licenses for free, making it easier for budget-conscious organizations to operate within copyright laws

 Podcast: › “A podcast is simply an audio -- and sometimes a video -- recording made available online. The word is a combination of the words "broadcast" and "iPod," Apple's MP3 player.” - orial/techtorial091b.shtml orial/techtorial091b.shtml › Does not require an iPod › Video podcasts are often called “vodcasts” › Can be one-time (stand alone) or serial › Involves a microphone or video camera recording to MP3 or Ogg Vorbis files (those are the 2 most common file types)

 Webcasts are often referred to as such when they are broadcast live, as opposed to podcasts which can either be live or recorded (although a live podcast is usually advertised as a “live podcast.”)

 Podcasts and iTunes: › The “pod” part of “podcast” refers to the Apple iPod, which is often used to access these media files › iTunes (an Apple program) allows users to choose subscriptions  These subscriptions act like RSS aggregators within the iTunes software, and serial podcasts will automatically update with new entries when applicable › iTunes can operate without an iPod, and it can be handy for keeping up with podcast subscriptions

 “An OpenCourseWare (OCW) is a free and open digital publication of high quality university ‐ level educational materials. These materials are organized as courses, and often include course planning materials and evaluation tools as well as thematic content.  OpenCourseWare are free and openly licensed, accessible to anyone, anytime via the internet.” 

 How it relates to media: › Opencourseware is an excellent example of how media technologies can be utilized to create enhanced educational experiences (in this case, for free!)  What kind of media technologies does it use? › Depends on the program: Members of the consortium use text, videos, interactive quizzes, audio, and podcasts
