6+1 Traits of Writing

Welcome to Writing Class! September 13, 2011  Objective: Students will define, compare, and contrast the 6 Traits of Writing.

What do you know about being a good writer?

Can you list the traits?

Take notes in compostion notebook in Notes/DOL/Grammar section.  Date it and label 6 Traits of Writing  Put page number in Table of Contents

Why do we take notes?

Ideas: Content is clear and focused 1.Defines a specific topic 2.Details focused on the topic (support paragraphs’ main ideas) (support paragraphs’ main ideas) 3.Details are quality and go beyond the obvious (show-me- don’t-tell-me)

Organization: the paper’s structure 1.Introduction draws reader in 2.Transitions connect ideas 3.Conclusion leaves the reader with a sense of closure 4.Overall the paper moves the reader along

Voice: the style of the writer 1.Writing is appropriate for the assignment 2.Writing connects with the audience 3.The purpose of the writing is understood by the reader 4.A personal stamp

Word Choice: vocabulary decisions 1.Language enhances meaning 2.Language clarifies understanding 3.Creative choices make it interesting 4.Word precision is obvious (it was revised until the writer decided it sounded the best that it could)

Sentence Fluency: writing has an easy flow 1.Sentence construction helps meaning 2.Sentences vary in length and structure 3.You can read it aloud easily

Conventions: uses standard writing conventions 1.Correct spelling 2.Correct punctuation 3.Correct capitalization 4.Correct grammar and usage

Presentation: how the paper looks 1.Properly formatted (followed directions about spacing, title, etc.) 2.Typed or NEATLY handwritten depending on the instructions
