17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 1 Oracle Discoverer Product Presentation  This is an ad hoc query and analysis tool for high performance user access to information  Present data in a text or graphics form …  Represent sense of data - information  Hide complexity of database from ordinary user - user doesn’t have to know SQL to ask efficient and effective queries

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 2 Some terminology...  OLAP - On Line Analytical Processing is a tool for analysis and presenting data  MDDB - MultiDimensional Data Base - data base with data placed within dimensions e.g. Oracle Express  Dimension - e.g. Time, People  Hierarchy of dimension - e.g. –Time : Year-Quarter-Month-Week-Day-Hour-Minute-Second –CERN : Division-Group-Section-Persons

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 3 Overview of Oracle Discoverer  “Oracle Discoverer” has evolved into a powerful tool for analyzing data with the advantage of integration with other Oracle solutions.  This tool can be used as a part of the Oracle Express system or to simulate a MultiDimensional Data Base from a flat Oracle database.  It can be called “OLAP on client side”. No need for specialized MDDB server with separate administration, just MDDB view over production system.  “Oracle Discoverer” is the ‘next generation’ query tool that has replaced “Oracle Data Query”.

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 4 Overview of Oracle Discoverer […]  Aggregation of data, according to hierarchy (e.g. average expenses within section, group or division)  Multiple and multilevel data hierarchies within the dimensions (e.g. Person-Section-Group, Person- Building )  Possibility to drill-down to detailed data and to drill-up to aggregation level

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 5 Pilot Project Within Mail Infrastructure Section of Internet Application Group - project on statistics and performance of servers and service  Data production system - system and service logs –Improve performance of service –Track or discover problems –Balance load of servers –Find abnormal behavior of system / service –Compare ‘status quo’ with historical data –Improve SPAM fighting

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 6 Architecture of Oracle Discoverer –Data Base - data storage –Administration edition –Data Base - End User Layer - storage for metadata of Discoverer [repository] –User edition Data storage EUL User Edition Administration Edition Read metadata Create & manage EUL Read EUL (dimensions, hierarchies …) Ask query Redirect query to data storage Requested data

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 7 Features of Administration Edition  Defining type of data and dimensions  Defining hierarchies of dimensions  Managing security - user access and privileges  Query Statistics  Managing (and creating) automatic summaries to speed up queries (on basis of query statistics)  Creating and managing available data, calculations, conditions etc  requires knowledge of databases

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 8 Features of User Edition  Create and manage –worksheets (query interfaces) –private calculations, conditions, totals –different aggregated and detailed views of data –graphs that are updated on-line, while drilling-down  Full access to all metadata authorized by administrator  Possibility to store worksheets on local disk or in repository (database)  Scheduling execution of worksheets  Requires no knowledge of SQL or databases

17th February, 2000 by Maciej Korzeniowski (CERN-IT-IA-MI) 9 Oracle Discoverer 3i [beta]- New Features  Administration edition - still Win interface  User edition - web based application  Works with any HTTP server  Oracle Discoverer Server on separate machine  Integration and full compatibility with Oracle Sever 8i  Low maintenance architecture for large number of users  To run user edition the only necessary software is any Java enabled web browser
