2013 NFHS SOFTBALL DP/FLEX

DP/FLEX RULE ADOPTED (3-3-6) DP / FLEX Rule allows for more participation and flexibility in the game. Gives coaches an option: not to use the DP / FLEX at all, or use the DP / FLEX option to its fullest extent.

DP/FLEX RULE (3-3-6) A DP does not have to be used. If used it must be noted on the starting lineup card. A team using the DP starts the game with 10, but could end with nine or 10. Practical application and sample exercises to follow.

THE LINEUP CARD The DP is the offensive player and must remain in same batting position for entire game. The name of player for whom the DP is batting (FLEX) will be placed in the No.10 position in lineup. This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed.

THE LINEUP CARD If replaced by a substitute, the DP position remains in the lineup. A starting or substitute DP may re-enter one time, as long as the DP returns to the original position in the batting order.

SUBSTITUTING FOR THE DP The DP may be replaced by: Pinch-runner Pinch-hitter FLEX Substitute In all cases, the DP has left the game, with one re-entry permitted.

SUBSTITUTING FOR THE DP Baker pinch-runs for Cooper Cooper has left the game and has a re-entry remaining 4 Baker DP This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed. Baker is now the DP

THE FLEX MAY PLAY OFFENSE If the FLEX bats or runs for the DP, the DP leaves the game The FLEX (Green) is now batting in the No. 7 position Any player may re-enter once. This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed. Lineup down to nine

THE DP RE-ENTERS The DP (Cooper) re-enters to bat or run The FLEX (Green): Returns to the No. 10 position This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed. Plays defense only Has never left the game

THE DP MAY PLAY DEFENSE FOR THE FLEX Cooper goes in to pitch Green has left the game 1 This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed. Lineup down to nine Green may re-enter

THE DP MAY PLAY DEFENSE The DP may also play defense at any position. If the DP plays defense for a player other than the FLEX, that player still bats and has not left the game.

THE DP MAY PLAY DEFENSE Cooper plays second base and still bats No. 7 Able no longer plays defense but still bats No. 2 4 This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed. Able has not left the game

ILLEGAL SUBSTITUTION The FLEX may NOT go into one of the first nine positions for someone other than the DP. An illegal substitution results.

KEY POINTS The role of the DP / FLEX is never terminated. A team may go from 10 to nine players and back to 10 any number of times during the game. The game may end with 10 or 9 players.

EASY REMINDERS The DP can never be on defense only. The FLEX can never be on offense only. The DP and the FLEX can never be on offense at the same time. The DP and the FLEX can play defense at the same time.

DP/FLEX RULE SAMPLE EXERCISES

SAMPLE LINEUP CARD All samples will use this line-up card and progress through a series of substitutions.

SAMPLE EXERCISE #1 “Jones" (DP) bats and gets on base safely. The offensive coach asks for time for a change. “Green will run for Jones."

SAMPLE EXCERCISE #1 Green (FLEX) running for Jones (DP) This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed.

SAMPLE EXERCISE #1 Note – Jones has left the game.

SAMPLE EXCERCISE #2 Two innings later, Green singles to left. The offensive coach asks for time to make a change. "Smith running for Green and Green will still be playing right field.”

Green remains in the game playing right field only SAMPLE EXCERCISE #2 Smith (sub) running for Green (FLEX) is recorded as a sub for Jones and becomes the new DP Green remains in the game playing right field only 6 Smith DP This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed.

SAMPLE EXERCISE #2 Note – Since Green will continue to play defense, Smith enters the game for the first time as the new DP. Since Green (FLEX) is still playing defense they have NOT left the game.

SAMPLE EXCERCISE #3 In the 4th inning, the offensive coach asks for time to make another change. “Jones to re-enter and bat for Smith.”

SAMPLE EXCERCISE #3 Jones (DP) re-enters for Smith 6 Smith DP This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed.

SAMPLE EXERCISE #3 Note – Jones has used her re-entry. Smith has left the game and has a re-entry remaining.

SAMPLE EXCERCISE #4 In the next half inning, the defensive coach asks for time to make another change. “Jones (DP) will play defense in center field for Thomas.”

SAMPLE EXCERCISE #4 Jones (DP) to play defense in center field for Thomas 8 6 Smith DP This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed.

SAMPLE EXERCISE #4 Note – Jones the DP is now playing offense and defense. Thomas still bats in the 3rd position in the lineup and is playing offense only.

SAMPLE EXCERCISE #5 Jones (DP) to play defense in right field for Green (FLEX) 8 9 8 6 Smith DP This slide contains several “layers” of the lineup card that can only be seen when the slide show is being viewed. Thomas goes back to center field

SAMPLE EXERCISE #5 Note – Jones (DP) is still playing offense and defense. Green (FLEX) has left the game since she is not playing defense (still has a re-entry remaining).

DP / FLEX Rule A DP does not have to be used. If used it MUST be NOTED on the STARTING LINE-UP. A team using the DP starts the game with 10 PLAYERS on the LINE-UP CARD, but could end the game with 9 or 10.

DP / FLEX Rule The STARTING DP can play DEFENSE for any of the OTHER 9 PLAYERS IN THE LINE-UP. . If the starting DP plays DEFENSE for a PLAYER listed within the FIRST 9 BATTING POSITIONS in the LINE-UP, the other PLAYER serves as a “Offense player” during the period, as she BATS ONLY. (Old Terminology was (TPD)

DP / FLEX Rule The player listed in the 10th POSITION in the LINE-UP will play DEFENSE ONLY and will be called a (FLEX PLAYER). The DP and the FLEX PLAYER can play DEFENSE SIMULTANEOUSLY. . If the starting DP plays DEFENSE for the FLEX PLAYER, the FLEX PLAYER has LEFT the game and the team continues with NINE PLAYERS.

DP / FLEX Rule The FLEX PLAYER can bat, or run, but only for the ORIGINAL DP, therefore, the FLEX PLAYER and the DP can NEVER be on OFFENSE SIMULTANEOUSLY. When the FLEX PLAYER bats for the DP, the FLEX PLAYER is moved from the 10th spot in the LINE-UP to the BATTING ORDER POSITION of the ORIGINAL DP. The DP is considered to have left the game, but the FLEX PLAYER has not be considered to have left the game.

DP / FLEX Rule If the DP RE-ENTERS the game, she MUST do so in her ORIGINAL BATTING ORDER POSITION and the FLEX PLAYER could: (A) move back to the No. 10 position in the line-up, or (B) leaves the game. If the FLEX PLAYER moves back to the 10th POSITION in the LINE-UP, the team resumes the game with TEN (10) PLAYERS and the FLEX PLAYER has never left the game.

DP / FLEX Rule A SUBSTITUTE can enter the game for either the DP or the FLEX PLAYER. The SUBSTITUTE can enter on defense, or as a PINCH HITTER or PINCH RUNNER.

KEY POINTS REMINDERS The role of the DP / FLEX is never terminated.

EASY REMINDERS REMINDERS: 1) The DP can never be on DEFENSE ONLY. 2) The FLEX PLAYER can never be on OFFENSE ONLY. 3) The DP and FLEX PLAYER can never be on offense at the same time.

EASY REMINDERS REMINDERS: 4) The STARTER and the SUBSTITUTE can not be in the game at the same time. 5) The STARTING DP and FLEX PLAYER has one reentry just as any other player.

EASY REMINDERS PENALTY for ILLEGAL RE-ENTRY of the DP or FLEX PLAYER is always RESTRICTION to the Bench / Dugout area. If the PLAYER is on OFFENSE, she is called OUT. If the PLAYER is on DEFENSE, the team on offense may have the choice of taking the result of the play or accepting the PENALTY.
