3 2019 Pitcher / DH Rule WARNING!!!! This rule in NOT in your Rulebook
The understanding is that this rule will be evolving Changes will be announced later

4 P/DH Overview Instead of the “book rule” DH, a team may choose to declare that the Starting Pitcher will become the DH later in the game. He is listed on the lineup card as (P/DH).

5 P/DH Overview Here is how it works: The team starts with 9 players
The Starting Pitcher is identified as (P/DH) Later in the game, when the starting pitcher is removed as the pitcher: He remains in the game as the DH.

6 P/DH Overview Here is how it works:
That means the team adds a 10th player to the lineup The Starting Pitcher is now the DH A substitute now replaces the Starting Pitcher in the field but will not hit. These 2 players are locked into the same spot in the lineup.

7 Restrictions & Substitutions
Once the starting pitcher leaves the mound to become the DH: There are now 10 players, including the DH and a fielder. The rest of the game, it’s the DH ‘book rule’. The starting pitcher immediately becomes the DH

8 Restrictions & Substitutions
Once relieved, the P/DH player may not play on defense again If the team terminates the role of the DH, the P/DH is out of the game

9 Restrictions & Substitutions
Legal Substitutions for the P/DH Once the P/DH becomes the DH, he may be subbed for, bringing a new DH into the game. He retains his re-entry right as a DH

10 Restrictions & Substitutions
Legal Substitutions for the P/DH When the P/DH leaves the mound, the team may option to immediately substitute another P/DH into the game. The original P/DH may not re-enter and play on defense (pitcher or fielder) The original P/DH goes to the dugout; the lineup remains at 9 players

11 Restrictions & Substitutions
Legal Substitutions for the P/DH While the P/DH is pitching, he bats for himself. If a team would have a substitute bat for the P/DH, that would either: Option in a new P/DH (See Substitution #2 Option above) End the role of the P/DH. Lineup stays at 9 for the rest of the game.
