UK Broadband Limited March 2013 Using LTE to Deliver Fixed Wireless and Next Generation Access Networks

What I would like to talk about today: How Fixed Wireless can deliver NGA today in rural areas How Fixed Wireless, using LTE, is future proof Position on State Aid for Fixed Wireless

[3 ] UKB uses LTE Spectrum in 3GPP Bands 42 and 43 Launched UKs first commercial 4G LTE network in Feb 2012 Now offering fixed wireless broadband in: Southwark, Swindon, Reading and Scunthorpe To business and domestic customers Currently building more networks and introducing mobile services in 2013 But first a word about UK Broadband We deliver fast home and business broadband

Fixed Wireless delivers NGA today

All wireless and all networks are not the same! Mobile: Networks are typically designed for voice and thin mobile broadband coverage over a wide area Fixed Wireless: NGA fixed wireless networks are designed for high bandwidth data capacity over a targeted area AND to be received by an efficient larger antenna (e.g. an indoor or outdoor broadband router) LTE technology can be used for both fixed wireless and mobile networks Networks need to be designed to deliver the solution for which they are built Fixed Wireless networks are not the same as Mobile networks

15 Metres high Average house 8 Metres high 7km 9km 15km Delivery Range of a 4G LTE base station (wireless cabinet) Throughput (DL / UL): 45Mbps / 5Mbps 30Mbps / 2Mbps 2Mbps / 0.5Mbps *Average values based on theoretical conditions: no terrain and/or clutter

How does Fixed Wireless deliver NGA? Delivers at least 30Mbps downlink Makes good use of the LTE tool box Design for a Committed Information Rate (CIR) Set network to always deliver to the CIR for each house Blocks new devices (mobile) from accessing the network Supports open access networks

LTE Evolution to 2014/5 Title 84Mbps / 10MHz DC 64QAM 2x2 MIMO >1.2Gbps / 80MHz 64QAM 300Mbps / 20MHz OFDM 4x4 MIMO 4x4 MIMO CA CoMP Relay 700MHz 800MHz 850MHz 900MHz 1500MHz 1700MHz 1800MHz 1900MHz 2100MHz 2300MHz 2600MHz 3500MHz 3600MHz 3GPP LTE Release 9 Available today LTE Advanced 20MHz channels 3GPP LTE Release 10 Available GPP LTE Release 11 Available 2014/5

State Aid for Fixed Wireless The EU is technology neutral on NGA networks 2 outstanding issues in the UK: Is it an interim solution? How is this reflected? The deployment rules must be the same as for FTTC The current BDUK wireless guidelines are under review Seek further clarification before finalising your tender

Thank you!
