Journal Impact Factor  “Average citation rate per published article” (Garfield 1972, p. 476)  Developed based on citation data from the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology  Journal impact factor for current year= # of citations for journal cited in two preceding years/# of articles published in journal during same period  Example: MIS Quarterly was cited 500 times during 2006 and The number of citable articles in MISQ = 90. Impact factor = 5.6

JIF impacted by…  Number of journals in a field  Number of articles in a journal  The frequency an average article is cited in a field  Publication lags (fields with faster publication cycles get higher JIF)  Turnover of knowledge accretion (History has low JIF)
