I Could Do That Review

What genre is “I Could Do That?” “ I Could Do That” is a biography. It tells about a person’s life and gives information on why that person was important.

List two things Esther did in the first two pages of the story to show she was resourceful and independent. Esther made tea at six years old. This was something the older girls normally did. She also learned to sew very well and opened her own shop.

What context clues help you figure out what the word millinery means on page 657? Millinery has something to do with hats. The text says that ladies wanted hats to match the dresses that Esther made. The next page says she opened a hat shop.

Why did Esther attend the abolitionist meetings at her church? Esther attended abolitionist meetings at her church because she did not believe that people should own slaves.

Where did Esther move after her first husband died? Why did she move there? Esther moved to Illinois after her first husband died to claim the land he owned and raise their son there.

Why did Esther think that women should be allowed to vote? Esther saw a proclamation that said that all men over 21 were called to vote, even the disorderly young men who knew very little about politics. She thought that it wasn’t fair because women worked just as hard, and were just as intelligent as men.

How did Esther’s second husband feel about women voting? Cite text evidence. Esther’s second husband, John, didn’t think women should vote. It says on page 659 that he said “Politics is the business of men.” Also, on page 664, it says that he “still didn’t think women should vote” even after women were given the right.

What is special about September 6, 1870? On September 6, 1870, Esther went to the polls to legally cast her vote.
