Mercantilism Warm-Up Use the following words to explain the economic system of ‘mercantilism.’ Trading posts Joint-stock companies Plantations Mother country Colonies Imports Exports

Sample answer Mercantilism required countries to have more exports than imports. Rulers could collect a portion of the profits made by joint-stock companies and thus supported these organizations. Valuable items were gathered at trading posts and sent back to the home country. Plantations grew cash crops that would increase the wealth of the mother country. Colonies were required to trade exclusively with their mother country no matter the price they demanded.

Sample MSL Constructed Response The Columbian Exchange accounts for the collapse of some nations and the great success of others. Explain one effect of the Columbian Exchange on American Indians.
