Why is it important for a country to have more exports than imports? Why did European rulers want to see the set-up of joint-stock companies, trading posts and plantations? Why did the kings want their colonies to trade only with the mother country? Why did the colonists smuggle goods into the English Colonies? What reasons did kings have for thinking that mercantilism was the way to power?

7 The Navigation Acts No country could trade w/ colonies unless goods were shipped in colonial or English ships Ships had to be run by by crews that were at least ¾ English The colonists could only export products to England Goods traded between the colonies and Europe first had to pass through an English port

9 Salutary Neglect Salutary = beneficial neglect = to ignore
--England relaxed its enforcement of most of the Navigation Acts in return for the loyalty of the colonies. Why? What does this mean?
