doc.: IEEE /0789r2 Submission July 2008 RuiJun Feng, China Mobile Topics Background Problem Proposal

doc.: IEEE /0789r2 Submission July 2008 RuiJun Feng, China Mobile Background Load balancing of users among APs is an important function for AP. –which is supported by most WLAN manufacturers. –Once the number of associated users exceeds the pre-defined threshold, AP will refuse new association requests from stations.

doc.: IEEE /0789r2 Submission July 2008 RuiJun Feng, China Mobile Problem In order to provide better user experiences, user access control, together with load balancing functionalities are very important to keep the network more stable. It’s also helpful to get the statistics for the concurrent number of potential users or traffic in a certain hot spot. –To support load balancing threshold setting and network expansion

doc.: IEEE /0789r2 Submission July 2008 RuiJun Feng, China Mobile Proposal An estimate can be made, depending on the number of refused association requests. –The estimate can provide valuable information to support the network expansion. The number of refused association request is an important indicator to analyze the potential users or traffic. –though it doesn’t reflect the exact gap between the network capability and the user requirement directly.

doc.: IEEE /0789r2 Submission July 2008 RuiJun Feng, China Mobile Proposal A new counter is proposed to add into MIB, called NumRefusedAssociationReq When the load balance function works, this counter starts to work as well. –Vice versa When an association request is refused by AP or AC that AP belongs to, the counter increases one. –This indicator should be collected by NMS periodically

doc.: IEEE /0789r2 Submission July 2008 RuiJun Feng, China Mobile Straw Poll Do you think it meaningful to put the NumRefusedAssociationReq counter into the MIB to facilitate some service and network quality statistics? - Yes - No - Don ’ t know
