Presentation transcript:

Jeremiah 31:31-34 31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to[d] them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbour, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

God looks after His chosen ones Verse 31: God is sovereign Verse 32: God is faithful to His promises Verses 33 – 34a: God renews hearts and spirits Verse 34b: God forgives sins

God looks after His chosen ones Verse 31: God is sovereign New Covenant [berit hadasa] “an everlasting covenant”, “covenant of peace”, “a covenant of the giving of the Spirit” ,”a new heart” or “a new spirit” Unilateral and unconditional Jeremiah intended to give hope to the exile, true remnants God intends to give hope through Jesus Christ to all who believe in Him and His cleansing sacrificial blood God foretells events unfold through time

God looks after His chosen ones Verse 31: God is sovereign Hebrews 9:15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

God looks after His chosen ones Verse 32: God is faithful to His promises What is the old covenant?

Are we really descended from this creature? Or created by God in His image?

God looks after His chosen ones Verses 33 – 34 a: God renews hearts God puts His law in His people’s mind and writes in on their hearts to renew hearts and spirits Those who are renewed become God’s people and it means We turn away from our former lives of independence from God We pick up a new set of principles guided by God’s Word and His Holy Spirit We trust God in all circumstances Those who are renewed do not need to teach their neighbour.

God looks after His chosen ones Verses 33 – 34 a: God renews hearts

God looks after His chosen ones Verses 34 b: God forgives sins 1 John 1:8-10 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Conclusion - God looks after His chosen ones Verse 31: God is sovereign Verse 32: God is faithful to His promises Verses 33 – 34a: God renews hearts and spirits Verse 34b: God forgives sins Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
