4.02 Sexual Harassment Critique career information in terms of reliability and compatibility to personal information

Sexual Harassment What is it? Any unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature

Types of Harassment  Quid pro quo  Occurs when one person makes unwelcome sexual advances toward another while promising certain benefits if the person complies  Hostile environment  Employees in a workplace are subject to a pattern of exposure to unwanted sexual behavior from persons other than an employee’s direct supervisor where supervisors or managers take no steps to discourage or discontinue such behavior (allowing clients, suppliers, delivery persons or even customers to persist in unwanted attention, such as asking for dates

Recognizing sexual harassment Is the behavior sexual in nature? Do other individuals view the behavior as sexual in nature? Is the behavior unwelcome? Is the behavior offensive? Does the behavior interfere with work? Does the harasser understand that the behavior is unwelcome?

Discouraging sexual harassment Know the law and your company’s policy on sexual harassment Be businesslike in dress, language and behavior at all times. Make the harasser know that you want the behavior to stop

Taking action against sexual harassment Tell the harasser to stop! Keep detailed written records. Report the offense to your supervisor unless your supervisor is the harasser. If your supervisor is the harasser, report the incident to his/her supervisor.
