Social Studies Professional Development 10/22

After last time you were feeling…

And maybe a little of this…

And just maybe you wanted to do this this…

We heard you so… We tried to answer your questions and concerns in a Frequently Asked Question document. Take your time reading through it and post any questions and concerns on the Social Studies Forum located on the moodle Teachers may respond to one another and Debbie and the coaches may as well. We want you to have time to work today with your school colleague.

Today’s Agenda FAQ and post concerns and questions on Social Studies Forum located on Moodle. Performance Tasks Guiding/ Essential Questions Generalizations Explore and Share Resources Feel free to get more refreshments and stretch when needed

What are Performance Tasks Performance Task: a way to assess what students know, understand, and can do at the end of a unit. It is what students know and can do, and is authentic to student learning. +Tasks+Overview +Tasks+Overview

Your Turn You may choose to work with the same group from last time or you may work with your colleague to develop a performance task for your unit plan. Use the literacy skills sheet as you develop your performance task. Be prepared to share whole group.

Guiding/Essential Questions

Three Types of Guiding Questions Factual Questions: these are locked in time, place, or situation. Factual Questions Conceptual Questions: these transfer over time and space. Conceptual Questions Provocative Questions: these have no right or wrong answer and are intended to stir debate. Provocative Questions

Examples of Guiding Questions How did native peoples in Europe and South America use and adapt to their environment? Is economic stability in Africa possible? How can immigration present both advantages and disadvantages for people moving to a new region or nation?

Your Turn Take this time to create 3-5 guiding questions for your unit plan. Refer to the social studies wiki for additional resources

Your Turn Take this time to develop at least two generalizations for your unit plan Remember generalizations are “Big Ideas”. Again, use the social studies wiki for additional resouces.

Explore and Share Resources Please take this time to work with your school colleague to explore resources located on the moodle and live binder. How can you use some of these resources in your units? Are there additional resources you would like to share with others? If so, post them on the social studies moodle.

Thank you Please complete the Exit Slip before you leave. Make sure your first and last name is written on the slip. This way we can address individual questions and concerns.
