Physical Properties Scandium is a powdery, silvery white metal. It is relatively light, and is very strong.

Uses Scandium is used in military aircrafts and space shuttle parts. Mixtures of aluminum and scandium were used in the Russian space crafts Mig 21, and Mig 29. Scandium is also used in high performance sports equipment, such as hockey sticks, baseball bats, and bicycle frames.

Facts about Scandium Scandium is very rare. It’s only mined in a handful of mines worldwide. Even though it was discovered in 1879 it had no uses until 1970. Even today scandium has very few uses. Pure scandium is very rare. It is usually found in uranium. Scandium is sometimes classified as a rare earth element.
