Bana Yarraliji Bubu introduction CULTURAL HEALING SKILL DEVELOPMENT TRADITIONAL DANCING TRADITIONAL LANGUAGE SELF DETERMINATION + AUTONOMY CROSS CULTURAL AWARENESS TOURIST INFORMATION & RESOURCE CENTER ACCOMMODATION BUSH WALKING TOURS ART + CRAFT SESSIONS Bana Yarraliji Bubu or Shiptons Flat is the ancestral home of Marilyn Wallace and her people. The family have plans to relocate from the nearby Wujul Wujul indigenous community back to their traditional land. They aim to create a self sufficient business that will culturally support and develop skills within the indigenous community and introduce tourism into the area. Conrad Yeatman is the nephew of Marilyn and Peter and is currently the Executive Officer of the successful Aboriginal & Islander Alcohol Relief Service. Conrad’s business background and eagerness to involve the development at Shiptons Flat within the Alcohol Relief Service program will provide vital income to the development and form a powerful place of self determination and healing. Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV), a not-for-profit organisation provides indigenous communities with opportunities to develop their business and employment through the assistance of skilled volunteers. ICV are helping Marilyn and Peter achieve their dream by connecting people and skills from the wider community to assist in various stages of the venture at Shiptons Flat. Sketch of the proposed Cultural Centre at Shiptons Flat

Bana Yarraliji Bubu cool water people’s place Marilyn and Peter Wallace have plans to develop Shiptons Flat into a place of cultural learning and support for people within the immediate and broader indigenous community. In the non-tourist season, school and community groups will have the opportunity to enjoy the facilities and learn about traditional indigenous culture. Situated in Far North Queensland, just north of the Daintree National Park, Bana Yarraliji Bubu will be a place which provides a unique cultural tourism experience. Visitors can experience traditional culture and explore rock art with exclusive walking tours. At night they can sit around a campfire and share in traditional dance ceremonies, hear dreamtime stories then retreat to private and luxurious tents or the camping ground to relax and enjoy the quiet bush nights. Bana Yarraliji Bubu is located on the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. It is approx. 35km south of Cooktown. Bana Yarraliji Bubu master plan - brief FIRE + DANCE GROUND The campfire and traditional dance ground is located near the Cultural Centre creating amphitheatre seating on the Centre’s steps. Under the circle of a natural tree canopy, it will be a place of cultural learning for the indigenous community and visitors. CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND The Children’s playground is centrally located for safety and supervision and will be constructed primarily from local timbers and re-used elements. It will be enjoyed by children living in the community and visitors. CAR PARKING To minimise impact of vehicles on the site, all car and coach parking areas for tours, campers and residents are restricted to the locations on or near the main access of Shiptons Flat Road. The existing driveway will be maintained for disabled access to the Cultural Centre only. GATHERING LEARNING LISTERNING HEALING GROWING CULTURAL CENTRE The Cultural Centre is centrally located on the site next to a beautiful ghost gum tree. It will be a place for formal and casual gatherings. The Centre will provide amenities for camping and short term living (self catering kitchen, laundry, toilet / shower facilities etc) LUXARY SAFARI TENTS + SHORT TERM LIVING The Safari tents are a great idea when introducing secure, cost effective and comfortable living units to an area with minimal impact on the surrounding landscape. CARE TAKER’S COTTAGE The Care Taker’s cottage is centrally located on the site while still providing adequate privacy to retreat in times of rest. WORKSHED A workshed has been proposed to store all maintenance and building equipment. It will be sub-divided to create workshop space for traditional skill development in making timber and leather artefacts for sale in the Cultural Centre retail facility. INDIGENOUS GARDEN The garden and tranquil seating area will utilise the existing poles constructed for the current temporary shelter. This facilitates an education area of indigenous plants for both community and tourists and provides potential income by selling the organic fruit and vegetables grown there. CAMPING GROUND The camping ground is nestled under a tree canopy in a quiet location on the site. It is within easy reach of activates and amenities at the cultural centre. Luxury safari tents can be scattered around this area and allow for private retreats for visitors. LONG TERM HOUSING 5 – 6 of two bedroom cabins including bathroom and kitchen facilities are to be privately positioned with separate car access, it is planned that these cabins will accommodate family, site workers and long term indigenous visitors as part of the Alcohol Relief Service program.
