Presentation transcript:

a preliminary proposal

The space, a blend of physical and virtual environments, transforms teaching and learning by allowing both staff and students to co-create knowledge. The physical environment is flexible and adaptable to the needs of individuals, small and large groups.

Program changes already in place… *a*a place to read current materials *a*a place for doing and learning *a*a n active place for social gathering *a*a place to find and access tech *a*a place to explore and collaborate *a*a place with access to current digital resources in addition to print resources

Proposed physical and conceptual changes… * a place that is owned by all staff and students * a place with flexible and comfortable furniture * power outlets throughout * remove outdated resources * a physical and virtual 24/7 place * a place that is the HUB of the school

We strive to make our library “the hub of the school, a space where learners of all ages gather to learn through conversation, collaboration, independent study, and purposeful play”. (West Bay’s Vision Statement)

* Redesign Model

Some Examples of what has been used in a Maker Space: * Sewing/Fabrics * Basic circuit kits (AA battery) * Cardboard/Paper building materials * Basic Woodworking tools * Computer programming/Coding

Our Maker Space Program: * Club model (to begin with) * As Inquiry projects incorporate more choice in “how to present learning” a Maker Space would provide a storehouse of materials to inspire choices for multimodal expressions and could be incorporated into the school day

And best of all, as a space traditionally and naturally designed to facilitate people working together, a school’s library provides the natural dynamics for developing a learning commons … (p. 2 of A Vision for the 21 st Century, Ontario Library Association, 2010).
