About the Course Your Instructors 1- Provide a basic technical understanding of HAM radio sufficient to full fill the Boy Scout “Radio Merit Badge” requirement. 2- Provide learning activities that meet the requirements of the “Radio Merit Badge”.

Terminal Learning Objectives Understand the difference between broadcast and hobby radio. Describe the difference between 2-way radio and broadcast radio. Understand broadcast and amateur call signs. Repeat the phonetic alphabet Describe how radio waves travel. Define the purpose of WWV and WWVH. Draw and label the electromagnetic spectrum. Identify MF, HF, VHF, UHF, and microwaves on EM spectrum. Identify 8 radio services on the EM spectrum. Explain how radio waves carry information. Explain at least 3 safety precautions related to radio gear. Understand the difference between block and schematic diagrams. Be able to draw a block diagram of a HAM radio station. Understand the differences between open, closed and short circuits. Recognize 5 Q signals or HAM radio terms. Optional: Learn how to listen to shortwave stations.
