Allusion A reference in a piece of literature that refers to something well known in other literature, history, art, religion, culture. It rained for so long, you’d think it’s rained for forty days!

Allusion The killer wore a mark of Cain as he stalked his brother. (Referring to the Bible story: Cain and Abel)

Allusion Homeless Bird Chapter 5 “I put Sass in chatting with her friends in the courtyard and Sassur reading from Tagore’s book of poems.” pg.74 Rabindranath Tagore wrote poems during the late 1800’s to mid 1900’s

Allusion Allusions are often used to summarize, broad complex ideas or emotions, in one quick powerful image. An allusion serves as kind of a shorthand drawing, on this outside work to provide greater context or meaning to the situation being written about. While allusions can be an economical way of communicating with the reader, they risk alienating the readers who do not recognize these references. Strong fiction (or poetry) will use allusions so that the fiction works on both levels. Allusions can also be thought of as a kind of hypertext, linking the reader to another traditional or literary history.
