What Does MY Reading Assessment Data say about ME?

Lexile Levels A Lexile measure is a valuable piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text, like a book or magazine article. A student gets his or her Lexile reader measure from a reading test or program.

Lexile Levels A book, article or piece of text gets a Lexile text measure when it's analyzed by MetaMetrics. For example, the first "Harry Potter" book is an 880 Lexile book. A Lexile text measure is based on two strong predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: – word frequency and sentence length. – Many other factors affect the relationship between a reader and a book, including its content, the age and interests of the reader, and the design of the actual book.

Lexile Levels Lexile levels measure a student’s reading ability and a text’s difficulty. When you receive a Lexile measure, try not to focus on the exact number. Instead, consider a reading range around the number. A person's Lexile range, or reading comprehension "sweet spot," is from 100L below to 50L above his or her reported Lexile measure.

Correlations Between Lexile and Grade Levels Lexile RangeGrade First Grade Second Grade Third Grade Fourth Grade Fifth Grade Sixth Grade Seventh Grade Eighth Grade Ninth Grade Tenth Grade Eleventh Grade Twelfth Grade 1300 and upThirteenth Grade Look at your MAP Data and Determine your grade level reading based on your lexile range. Write your grade level next to your lexile range.

RIT Scores Your RIT score indicates your instructional level based on the level of questions you answered correctly 50% of the time. A RIT scale is an equal interval scale. This means it’s consistent, like a ruler. – A student who shows instructional growth from 160 to 165 shows the same amount of instructional growth as a student who goes from 285 to 290: five points of growth.

RIT Scores RIT scores are independent of grade level, however there are “typical” RIT scores for each grade level. If a 3 rd grade student and an 8 th grade student earn a 210 RIT score this means they are at the same instructional level.

RIT Scores and Grade Level Correlations Winter 2011Spring 2012 Where are you on this table? Write your grade level next to your RIT score for both Winter and Spring

Percentile Scores Percentile score provide the most direct reference to how a student preformed compared to the general population of students in the same age range.

Percentile Scores A perfectly average score is 50%. The average range is roughly from 25% to 75%. Scores at or above the 25 th percentile are probably not of any significant concern. Scores between the 10 th and 25 th percentile are of moderate concern. Scores below the 10 th percentile suggest relatively significant difficulty

What Does this Data say about YOU? Think about what this data says about you as a learner. Where do you think you are now? Where do you want to be at the end of the year? What can you do to reach your goal? How can your teachers help you?
