Rational Numbers A PowerPoint for Ms Purcell’s 6th grade. 1/2 3/4 0.54 Rational Numbers A PowerPoint for Ms Purcell’s 6th grade. 8% -9 MCC6.NS.6.c: Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.

Rational means “written as a ratio Rational means “written as a ratio.” A ratio is the comparison of two quantities using division. A rational number is a number that can be written as the ratio of two integers, where the denominator is not equal to zero. Simple fractions like ½ are rational. But whole numbers and decimals are rational too, because they can be also be written as ratios. For example, 9 can be written 9/1. Decimals like 0.25 can be written as 25/100.

Rational numbers can be positive or negative. Rational numbers include: Integers Fractions Mixed numbers Percents Terminating decimals Repeating decimals These numbers are all examples of rational numbers: 5/8 0.46 -9 3.33 25 and 10%

Rational numbers have opposites, just like integers do Rational numbers have opposites, just like integers do. For example, 2/3 and -2/3 are opposites. Likewise, -5.10 and 5.10 are also opposites. Find the opposites for the rational numbers on this number line:

Explain why 2/3, 6 and 0.4 are rational numbers. Example Explain why 2/3, 6 and 0.4 are rational numbers. Ask, can I write these numbers in the form a/b? The number 2/3 is written in the form a/b. The number 6 can be written as 6/1 which is in the form a/b. The number 0.4 can be written as 4/10 which is in the form a/b. The number 2/3, 6 and 0.4 are rational numbers because each can be written in the form a/b.

How do we plot rational numbers less than one on a number line How do we plot rational numbers less than one on a number line? Step 1: Determine what each mark on the number line stands for. Count the spaces between zero and one. The number of spaces tells you the fractional units the line is divided into. Step 2: Determine whether your number is positive or negative. Step 3: Plot the number on the line.

How do we plot rational numbers greater than one on a number line How do we plot rational numbers greater than one on a number line? Step 1: Determine what each mark on the number line stands for. Count the number of spaces between zero and the largest number on the number line. Step 2: Determine whether the integer is positive or negative. Step 3: Plot the number on the line. 10
