1 Whole, Integers, Rational and Natural Numbers M7N1. Students will understand the meaning of positive and negative rational numbers and use them in computation.

2 Natural Numbers Natural Numbers are your normal counting numbers. Examples: 2, 6, 59, 341, 2578, etc. Natural numbers DO NOT include 0, anything with a decimal or fraction, or negative numbers.

3 Whole Numbers Whole numbers are the natural counting numbers, but they also include 0. Examples of whole numbers are: 0, 27, 389, 43, 78, etc. Whole numbers DO NOT include fractions, decimals or negative numbers.

4 Integers Integers are positive and negative numbers and zero. For example, -10, 56, -1, 9, 16 etc. Integers DO NOT include fractions, decimals.

5 Rational Numbers Rational numbers are any numbers that can be written as a fraction, and any decimal that ends or repeats the same number over and over again, including zero. Numbers that can be written as a fraction include: 1/2, -2/3, 15 because 15= 15/1 etc. Repeating decimals and terminating decimals look like this: 2.3333…., -1.27,.66666….., -2.9999, etc. (NOTE: These decimals can also be written in fraction form)

6 Decide what category(s) each of the following numbers fit in to. Example: -27 -27 is an integer and a rational number, because it is negative and can be written as a fraction (-27/1)
