U SING THE AK L IBRARY C ATALOG

U SING A DVANCED S EARCHES From the Home page of the AK Library Catalog, click the “Additional Searches” tab at the top of the page. Below the tabs, there is a list of additional search tools. Click the link that says “Advanced.” This will present ways to easily narrow your book search.

F INDING A B OOK To find a book using General Keyword, type the topic of the book you are searching for into the box next to “General Keyword” on the Advanced search page. For example, when searching for books on plagiarism, all the books related to the topic will appear in a list.

F INDING A B OOK ( CONTINUED ) In the list of books from your search, the call number, used to locate the book in the AK library, will be given along with the check status, or availability, of the book.

R EFINING A S EARCH From the Home page of the AK Library Catalog, you can conduct a basic search. From that list, you may click “Refine Search” to narrow the results. When you click to refine the search, a screen like is shown above will appear and give you multiple options to narrow the search.

R EFINING A S EARCH ( CONTINUED ) For example, if a student was looking for a book by Ernest Hemingway, he or she could conduct a basic search from the homepage by typing in “Hemingway.” From that list, he or she could click to refine the search by “Author Keyword.” A list of books with the author “Hemingway” would then appear, and the student could find the call number and availability of the desired book. Here, we see that we would find A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway in the fiction section with the call number “HEM” and it is checked in.

C HECKING O UT To check out the book or books you want, bring them to the circulation desk and provide the library assistant with your student ID number (ex ) You may check out a maximum of 10 books at a time.
