Who are the actors? European Forest Institute (EFI) Nordic Forest Research Cooperation Committee (SNS) The Nordic Council of Ministers, founded in The Nordic organization for inter-governmental co-operation. EFI SNS EFINORD

Presenting SNS SNS executive committee: Two members from each Nordic country + two observers (Aaland and Faroe Islands) Members: Research institutes, research funding bodies, forest administration agencies and forest owners and industrial interests. Purpose: To promote research into the diverse functions in sustainable forestry, as well as to advice the Nordic Council of Ministers on questions concerning forests and forestry research. Budget: 1 million € per year SNS secretariat rotates (4 yrs) between the five Nordic countries (presently at METLA, Finland) and is from January 1st 2010 based at Forest & Landscape Denmark.

Presenting EFINORD Scope Sustainable forest management in the Nordic and Baltic countries with its four dimensions: ecological, economic, social and cultural Main objectives to enhance forest research in multiple use and sustainable development in the Nordic and Baltic countries to strengthen the role of the Nordic and Baltic countries in European co-operation to give advice to policy makers at the national, Nordic and EU level.

Organisation of EFINORD Participating countries: Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland) + possibly Scotland, Ireland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, northern Germany, northern Poland Hosting country: Denmark (Forest & Landscape) EFINORD

Synergy and complimentarity Synergy EFINORD can create synergy within forest research by granting support to networks, research meetings, projects, joint utilization of unique research facilities, etc. SNS/EFINord as the stepping stone to integrate Nordic Forest research and Nordic Forestry more in to the EU. Complementarity EFINORD can complement the activities of EFI by offering: links to the Nordic Council of Ministers and the organs under it links to the Nordic and Baltic research communities ready-to-use networks in various fields of forest research a platform where the researcher community and policy makers meet on a regular basis
