Cellular Generators Sausage-shaped, about the size of bacteria Two membranes: a smooth outer, and a smooth folded membrane – with numerous layers Mitochondria provide the energy a cell needs to move, divide, produce secretory products, contract - in short, they are the power centers of the cell. They are about the size of bacteria but may have different shapes depending on the cell type.

Mitochondria Inner membrane is shaped into folds called cristae. Above is a picture cut lengthwise to the inside of the mitochondria.

Mitochondrial Disease Is caused by damage in the in energy producing cells- called “power plants” in the brain Symptoms: 1. heart failure 2. deafness 3. blindness, or limited sight 4. vomiting 5. droopy eyelids 6. movement disorders
