Anthropometry, Ergonomics & Design

Ergonomics & Human Factors Ergo + Nomics = Laws of work Matching capabilities & limitations of individuals to demands of task Human Factors Study of how humans behave physically and psychologically in relation to particular environments, products, or servi ~https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/human-factors-ergonomics

Anthropometry Definition Study of dimensions & physical characteristics of the human body Mass & Length primarily

People do vary Age, Gender, Ethnicity

So? How do you account for variation b/w individuals? How does this variation influence design? Could anthropometry be used to address design issues taking into account variation b/w individuals?

Measurement Devices

So what am I measuring? Length? Height? Mass? Depends Clearly define what you are measuring & how you are going to do it Device Identification of landmarks A thorough understanding of the outcome is essential

Sample Anthropometric Data

That looks like a lot of data Is there a simpler process? Yes

What do people think of anthropometry & ergonomics? Five fallacies Design is satisfactory for me, it will therefore be satisfactory for everybody else Design is satisfactory for the average person, it will therefore be satisfactory for everybody else Variability in human beings is so great that it is impossible to cater to everybody, humans are wonderfully adaptable Ergonomics is $$$ Ergonomics is great – it is just common sense – I do not have to use any data

Ok, got the fallacies … So are there some design guidelines that I can follow? Let’s start with design philosophies Design for average Design for extreme Design for adjustability

Design for extreme Define extreme Regardless  $$$ > 99th %ile

Design for range Try to accommodate 95% of the population 5th %ile female to 95th %ile male Adjustability

Design for average Is there an average? However, public facilities are designed for the “average” person

Is anthropometry really important?

I think it is

Applications Biomechanical modeling Clothes Chair & Desk Reach issues – miner Safety restraints for kids We can go on and on …
