The Elements of Art: Color Color in Photography

Elements of Art The basic components used by an artist when producing works of art. The elements include line, shape, value, texture, and color. The Elements of Art are the foundation of Art and Photography. We have already discussed Line and Texture as Elements of Art. Today we are going to look at Color.

Color Wheel A Color Wheel is a circular arrangement of color hues that illustrates the relationship between colors such as the primary colors, secondary colors, complementary colors, etc. The word “Hue” refers to the name of a color( for example: red, blue, yellow, orange).

Color Color is the visual sensation dependant on the reflection or absorption of light from a given surface. Color Theory is an element of art. Color has three properties: hue, value, and intensity

Primary Colors The Primary Colors are red, yellow and blue. These are considered primary because combining other colors together cannot create them. RED YELLOW BLUE

Secondary Colors The Secondary Colors are created when two primary colors are mixed together. The secondary colors are orange, green and violet. ORANGE GREEN VIOLET

Tertiary Colors A Tertiary Color is created when a primary and secondary color are mixed. Tertiary colors have the name of the primary color first, followed by the name of the secondary color. RED ORANGE YELLOW GREEN BLUE VIOLET

Complementary Colors Complementary Colors are colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. Red Green Blue Orange Yellow Violet Yellow Orange Blue Violet Red Violet Yellow Green Blue Green Red Orange

Complementary Colors in Photography The complementary colors in this photo are Red and Green. Red and Green are opposite of each other on the color wheel.

Complementary Colors in Photography The complementary colors in this photo are Blue and Orange. Blue and Orange are opposite of each other on the color wheel.

Your Assignment…. Use photography to visually display the Element of Art known as Color and the subcategory of Complementary Colors. You will photograph a flower on campus. Zoom in and adjust your body as needed to get the angle you want. You will then use Photoshop to manipulate the colors so that you use a Complementary Color Scheme. Before you get started you will work on a Complementary Color Worksheet.

Complementary Color Assignment Objective: Show Complementary Colors in photography Requirements: Complete the Complementary Color Worksheet. 5 photos that clearly show a flower. In Photoshop highlight the pedals and background with the Quick Selection tool or Selection Tool of your choice. With the highlighted areas, adjust the Color Balance to recolor the image. Image, Adjustment: Color Balance. Composition shows thought and creativity Save your finished photos in your Finished Work Folder Save as, Complementary Color 1, Complementary Color 2, Complementary Color 3, Complementary Color 4, Complementary Color 5.
